ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Oct. 20, 2016) - For 105 minutes, the Molloy College women's soccer team played on par and on level terms with the No. 25 LIU Post Pioneers in a tight contest at RVC Sports Complex. Unfortunately for the Lions, the 106th minute proved to be the unluckiest minute of all as a loose rebound in the Molloy defensive zone found the foot of Alice Schonfeldt (Burtrask, Sweden); the sophomore midfielder tapped in a shot off the far-side post to claim the overtime victory as the Pioneers knocked off Molloy by a 1-0 score on Thursday (Oct. 20).
Molloy (6-7-1, 3-3 ECC) came out of the gate with the aggression in the first half, firing five shots and getting all attempts on target. However, each try was stopped by LIU Post keeper Hillevi Eklow (Varobacka, Sweden) including two from senior forward
Danielle Valente (South Setauket, N.Y.). On the other side of the ball, the Lions were stingy on defense in holding the opposition to just two shots with efforts by Schonfeldt and Medina Mulic (Ridgewood, N.Y.) failing to test the mettle of goalie
Brianna Wilson (Levittown, N.Y.). The first half ended without incident and the second half proved to be the opposite side of the pendulum, with LIU Post (10-2-2, 4-1-1 ECC) attempting five shots to Molloy's two. Wilson was forced to make saves in the 58th minute against Mulic and in the 76th minute on an attempt by Schonfeldt; meanwhile, Molloy's best chance came off of a set piece in the 60th minute as senior
Jessica Malone (Long Beach, N.Y.) swung in a corner kick that was headed on net by
Gabrielle Batista (Hicksville, N.Y.). Eklow was up to the task and made the easy save as neither side found the marker to open the scoring.
The overtime periods would settle the final chapter of the contest, with LIU Post outshooting Molloy 2-0 in the first extra session of play. Only one shot was on target for the green and gold as Veronica Saager (East Islip, N.Y.) tried for the winner in the 99th minute to no avail on a save by Wilson. In the second overtime period, both teams got an early shot on net that was parried away by the respective keepers. Then in the 106th minute, the golden goal was scored by Schonfeldt only after an initial attempt from Gabrielle Clark (Edmonds, Wash.) was blocked in front and then swiped away by Wilson. The parry attempt fell right to the foot of Schonfeldt, who maneuvered around the Molloy netminder and found a small space off the side post to tuck the winner into the back of the net.
LIU Post outshot Molloy by a 12-8 margin in the contest with Schonfeldt, Mulic and Andrea Huntzinger (Stockholm, Sweden) each attempting three shots total. Meanwhile, Valente's two shots paced the maroon and white while the team put seven shots on goal that were all saved by Eklow. Wilson had four saves in net for the Lions.
