Women's Soccer Stumbles in 7-0 Loss at Bridgeport

Box Score BRIDGEPORT, CONN. (Oct. 15, 2016) - Senior Danielle Valente (South Setauket, N.Y.) came out firing, sending a shot into the arms of keeper Jennifer Wendelius in the first 90 seconds of play in Molloy's contest with No. 17 Bridgeport on Saturday (Oct. 15). Bridgeport, however, was ready to respond, as Shannon Colligan (Greenwich, Conn.) sent the ball past sophomore goalkeeper Brianna Wilson (Levittown, N.Y.) off a free kick in the fourth minute. Molloy would try for a response of their own, but a shot by Amanda Milazzo (Setauket, N.Y.) went wide of the net. The action continued to be back and forth with no team gaining an advantage until Colligan sent a thru ball past the Molloy defense for Idoia Agirre (Legazpi, Spain) to send into the goal to double the lead for the Purple Knights. The maroon and white were able to keep Bridgeport at bay into the half, despite being outshot 17-7.

Hanne Neby (Furnes, Norway) sent a ball to Agirre, who put Bridgeport up 3-0 early in the second frame. Valente once again tried to get something started for the Lions, but her shot was kept out by Wendelius. A cross from Kendra Fitzpatrick (Darien, Conn.) to Flo Gamby (Goffs Oak, England) sent the game to 4-0 in the 67th minute before Nicola Worthington (Chorley, England) sent a penalty shot past Wilson for the 5-0 lead. A pair of goals from Amy Strath (Aberdeen, Scotland) would round out the game's 7-0 score. Molloy was held to ten shots on the day, four of which were on goal, while Bridgeport launched 29 with 13 on goal. The Lions were also on the lower end of the 7-0 corner kick differential. Bridgeport improved to 10-3 on the seaon, while remaining undefeated (4-0) in the East Coast Conference. Molloy fell to 6-6-1 overall and 3-2 in conference with the loss.

The Lions return home following a four-game roadtrip as they host conference rival LIU Post on Thursday (Oct. 20) at Rockville Centre Sports Complex at 4:00 p.m.
