Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Sept. 26, 2015) - The Molloy College women's soccer team ended an over-300 minute scoreless streak in emphatic fashion on Saturday, scoring three times in the second half to defeat Dominican (N.Y.) by a 3-0 score at John A. Darcy Field.
Molloy (2-3-2) absolutely dominated the competition, outshooting the Chargers by a 40-3 margin in the entire contest. Dominican (N.Y.) (0-5) did not muster a shot in the entire first half of action, getting all three shots in the latter 45 minutes of action. The Lions, though, were held off the scoresheet in the opening act of the contest and had to stage a late rally in the final 20 minutes of action.
Following a near-side throw-in that was misplayed by freshman defender Jenna Gray (Pine Bush, N.Y.), the ball bounced towards the Chargers' six-yard box. From there, junior
Gabrielle Batista (Hicksville, N.Y.)---who had started the game as the Lions' goalkeeper before playing the final half as an attacking forward---lofted a shot goalward that was parried by freshman goalkeeper Angelica Contreras (Baytown, Texas). Contreras, however, tapped the ball with her right hand straight into the back of the net, giving the home side a one-goal advantage at the 71:14 mark of the contest. Molloy struck for a second goal eleven minutes later, off of a set piece. Contreras had the ball trapped between her and a defender until freshman midfielder
Dominique Capolongo (Islip, N.Y.) freed the ball from traffic and slotted a shot into the lower center portion of the net. One minute later and at the 83:30 mark of the game, sophomore back
Mariella Gotti (Valley Stream, N.Y.) bent a corner kick into the box where freshman defender
Allie Rainey (Smithtown, N.Y.) ended up taking a shot that beat Contreras for her first career marker and Gotti's first point of the season.
Graduate goalkeeper
Kelsey Dittmeier (Great Neck, N.Y.) earned the win by virtue of her playing the final 45 minutes and making two saves in net for Molloy in the second half. Sophomore
Sam Bernieri (Massapequa, N.Y.) led the offensive onslaught with seven shots and four shots on goal, while red-shirt senior
Annette Mims (Patchogue, N.Y.), junior
Courtney Noakes (Levittown, N.Y.) and freshman
Amanda Milazzo (Setauket, N.Y.) had 14 shots and six shots on target in the victory. Noakes and Mims spent the first half on the back line, which kept the Chargers from getting the ball across midfield for a majority of the contest, before switching to playing attacking midfield roles in the final act of the competition.
For Dominican, sophomore Ina Koeder (Schwaebisch Hall, Germany) had a team-high two shots. Contreras made 11 saves in the losing effort.
The Molloy men's soccer team will next play at Philadelphia on Wednesday (Sept. 30) in a non-conference tilt beginning at 4 p.m.
