Box Score PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (Sept. 21, 2015) - The Molloy College women's soccer team could not muster any offense as the Lions were silenced by Holy Family on Monday, losing by a final score of 2-0 at Tiger Field. Molloy now falls to 1-3-2 on the season while Holy Family improves to a 4-1 mark in 2015.
The sides had plenty of chances in the first twenty minutes of action, but both goalies were up to the task. The first shot of the contest came just before the third minute of play as Holy Family's Stephanie Ulmer (Philadelphia, Pa.) had her attempt on net saved away by Lions keeper
Kelsey Dittmeier (Great Neck, N.Y.). The Lions would take a couple of shots goalward, but an effort by junior forward
Danielle Valente (South Setauket, N.Y.) went over the crossbar in the ninth minute and then a shot off the foot of senior midfielder
Alicia Mercurio (Williston Park, N.Y.) was collected by Tigers goalie Sienna Smith (Pottsville, Pa.). The maroon and white took another chance towards net as junior back
Courtney Noakes (Levittown, N.Y.) sent in a corner kick to teammate
Allie Rainey (Smithtown, N.Y.) in the 22nd minute. Unfortunately, the freshman could not find the back of the net as Smith made another save.
The home side eventually paid dividends and struck for the opening goal of the contest not two minutes later, as junior forward Ursula Coyle (Philadelphia, Pa.) fired a shot past Dittmeier into the back of the net. Coyle's third goal of the year came off of a pass from senior attacker Jenna Richards (Croydon, Pa.) to give the Tigers a one-goal lead. Holy Family grabbed the insurance marker with less than eight minutes to go in the first half as a corner kick turned into a goal for freshman Brianna Rock (Bensalem, Pa.). Rock took the initial set piece, then found her way to the ball and slotted a shot off the left post and over the goal line.
Molloy had plenty of chances to cut the deficit, but the Lions could not convert on any opportunities thanks to the play of Smith in the net for the home team. The junior stopped all five attempts on goal to earn the clean sheet for Holy Family, while Dittmeier made two saves in her first start of the fall campaign. Senior midfielder
Shannon Murphy (North Babylon, N.Y.) took a team-high four shots while Valente added three to pace the Lions, who had five different players (Murphy, Valente, Mercurio, Rainey and
Dominique Capolongo (Islip, N.Y.)) attempt shots on goal in the loss.
The Lions will look to bounce back with a win on Saturday (Sept. 26) as the maroon and white play host to Dominican (N.Y.) in Rockville Centre.
