Women's Soccer Drops ECC Opener to Queens, 1-0

Box Score

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Sept. 19, 2015) – The Molloy College women's soccer team was limited to just two shots on goals as the Lions fell to Queens College on Saturday by a final score of 1-0. The maroon and white drop to 1-2-2 on the season and 0-1 in ECC play, while the Knights move to 3-2 on the year and 1-0 in conference competition.

Neither team got on the scoreboard in the first half, but not for a lack of chances on either side of the pitch. Molloy took five shots in the opening 45 minutes, including two efforts from junior midfielder Jessica Malone (Long Beach, N.Y.), but none of the shots were on target. Meanwhile, the home side had three shots in the first half with the best opportunity coming off of the foot of sophomore back Courtney Locurcio (Hicksville, N.Y.) in the 28th minute. The Knights were stymied by junior goalkeeper Gabrielle Batista (Hicksville, N.Y.) for her only save of the first frame of action.

The Lions had a chance in the opening three minutes of the second half, but freshman midfielder Amanda Milazzo (Setauket, N.Y.) was stonewalled from scoring the game's opening marker by Knights keeper Megan Deak (West Islip, N.Y.). Queens would strike in the 69th minute as senior forward Nicolette Scrozzo (Smithtown, N.Y.) found fellow Smithtown native Erin Vernillo on the outside of the 18-yard box with a pass that Vernillo would tuck into the right side of the net past Batista for the game's first and only goal. The maroon and white were silenced the rest of the way, save for a Malone shot in the 79th minute that was swept aside by Deak.

Malone led all players with three shots in the contest, but Queens outshot Molloy 10-7 as a team. The Knights also won four corners while limiting the Lions to just two set pieces from the corner flag. Deak made two saves for the home side in preserving the clean sheet, while Batista stopped three shots in net for Molloy in the losing effort.

Head Coach Danny Longo and the Molloy College women's soccer team will make a quick turnaround and head to Philadelphia for a non-conference tilt with Holy Family on Monday (Sept. 21). Kick-off is set for 4 p.m.
