Baseball Defeats ECC-Foe Dowling, 11-3

Box Score BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. (May 1, 2015) – On Friday afternoon, the Molloy College baseball team defeated Dowling College, the team tied atop the East Coast Conference standings, 11-3, at Golden Lions Field in Brookhaven, N.Y.  With the win, the Lions improve to 21-21 overall and 9-12 in league play. Following the loss, Dowling slips to 25-12 (13-8 ECC).

In the first inning, freshman Angelo Navetta (Staten Island, N.Y.) singled home junior Deilyn Guzman (East Hampton, N.Y.) to give Molloy an early 1-0 lead. In the second frame, junior Nicholas Gonchar (Staten Island, N.Y.) reached on a fielding error committed by Dowling, which allowed junior Michael Rahn (Sayville, N.Y.) to score.

The Golden Lions scored one run in the second to halve the Lions' lead to 2-1. Over the fourth, sixth and seventh innings, Molloy plated eight unanswered runs. In the fourth, senior Kyle Van Duyne (Sayville, N.Y.) recorded a two-run single, before sophomore Anthony Alberghina (Staten Island, N.Y.) had an RBI groundout.

In the sixth, Van Duyne doubled in sophomore Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.), followed by Guzman scoring via a wild pitch.

In the seventh inning, Murphy reached on a fielding error by the left fielder, allowing three runs to score. At this point, Molloy led, 10-1. Dowling scored twice more in the seventh and eighth, before Molloy plated its final run in the ninth.

On the hill, junior Shea Spitzbarth (Staten Island, N.Y.) pitched six innings, giving up one run on three hits. He whiffed six batters and improved to 4-1 on the season.

Head Coach Joe Fucarino and the Lions return to the diamond tomorrow when they host Dowling in a doubleheader at Mitchel Field in Uniondale, N.Y. beginning at 12 p.m.  Tomorrow is also Wounded Warrior Day as the Molloy baseball program will honor a veteran from the Wounded Warrior Project.
