Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Apr. 7, 2014) – On Tuesday evening, the Molloy College women's lacrosse team upended the University of Bridgeport, 10-6, at the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex in Rockville Centre, N.Y. With the win, the Lions improve to 7-5 on the year and 2-3 in the East Coast Conference. Following the loss, the Purple Knights fell to 8-2 (3-2 ECC).
This game was dedicated to the late Sgt. James J. Regan (Manhasset, N.Y.) – an Army Ranger that served and protected our country through numerous tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. His father established the Lead The Way Fund following Sgt. Regan's death in Iraq in 2007. The Lead The Way Fund raises money in support of U.S. Army Rangers and the families of Rangers who have died, been disabled and are serving in harm's way. Molloy senior Meghan Orlando (Hicksville, N.Y.) put the Lions on the board first when she scored immediately following the opening draw. Junior Katie O'Brien (Oyster Bay, N.Y.), two minutes later, received a feed from sophomore Cooper Sesselman (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and proceeded to fire it past the goalie to put the Lions ahead, 2-0.
Bridgeport tied the game at 2-2 before the Lions reeled off four straight tallies to take a 6-2 advantage. Freshman Jessica Markowitz (Baldwin, N.Y.) started the spurt off with a goal at the 16:00 mark, followed by markers off the sticks of senior Casey Naab (Floral Park, N.Y.), graduate student Shannon Defliese (Garden City, N.Y.) and O'Brien. The Purple Knights scored at the 5:04 mark before halftime to change the score to 6-3 in favor of Molloy.
Following the intermission, Bridgeport tacked on another run to further trim its deficit to 6-4. Molloy then scored two unanswered tallies – one from sophomore Taylor Corcoran (Holbrook, N.Y.) and the other from Sesselman. Following Bridgeport's goal that turned the score to 8-5, O'Brien recorded the hat trick, scoring her third goal at the 9:57 mark. A man-up goal from Bridgeport's Katlyn Dempsey was the final marker on the night for the Purple Knights. Defliese picked up an important goal late, as she scored with 4:22 left off a pass from Corcoran.
For Molloy, O'Brien had three goals, while Defliese netted two. Sesselman dished out three assists. In the cage, senior Laura Vetter (Great River, N.Y.) made 11 saves.
Head Coach Tom Campolettano and the Lions return to action on Saturday, April 11 when they play at St. Thomas Aquinas College beginning at 1 p.m.
