Box Score FLUSHING, N.Y. (Apr. 30, 2015) – On Thursday, the Molloy College softball team fell to LIU Post on Day 1 of the East Coast Conference Championship Tournament by the final score of 5-2. With the loss, the Lions drop to 23-26 overall, while the Pioneers improve to 29-13-1.
In the third inning, Molloy, serving as the visiting team since it was the third seed, scored the game's first runs when junior Tracey Balinskas (Edison, N.J.) – a couple of hours before it was announced she won the ECC Player of the Year Award – launched a two-run homer to left field. Senior Brianne Catalano (Franklin Square, N.Y.) scored on the play to give the Lions a 2-0 lead.
However, one inning later, LIU Post scored all five of its runs to take a 5-2 lead, which ended up being the final score. A Sacrifice fly, an RBI single and a three-run triple was the cause of the damage.
In the circle, sophomore pitcher Chelsea Hawks (Wading River, N.Y.) gave up five runs in five innings. She allowed seven hits and whiffed two batters. Balinskas came on in relief to throw a scoreless sixth frame.
Head Coach Susan Cassidy-Lyke and the Lions will next take on the fourth-seeded NYIT Bears tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. at the Queens College Softball Complex. The ECC Tournament is a double-elimination style tournament, so if the Lions lose versus NYIT, their season concludes. If Molloy wins, it will play at 4 p.m. versus the loser of the 11 a.m. LIU Post/Queens contest. LiveStats and an audio/video broadcast is available for all the tournament games at MolloyLions.com.
