Box Score UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Apr. 27, 2015) – On Monday afternoon, the Molloy College baseball team saw its playoff hopes dissipate with an 8-6 loss to Mercy College at Mitchel Field in Uniondale, N.Y. The Lions – needing five straight league wins to earn a berth to the postseason tournament – weren't able to secure the win tonight, thus eliminating them from playoff contention. With the loss, Molloy fell to 20-20 (8-12 ECC), while the Mavericks improved to 12-25 (6-14 ECC).
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the third, junior
Nicholas Gonchar (Staten Island, N.Y.) singled home sophomore
Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.) to even the score. Two innings later, junior
Deilyn Guzman (East Hampton, N.Y.) smacked a triple to right center, permitting Gonchar to come around and score.
In the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, Mercy found its offense scoring seven runs. Behind 8-2 in the bottom of the eighth with their backs against the wall, the Lions slowly, but surely started to respond. Freshman
Angelo Navetta (Staten Island, N.Y.) trimmed two runs off his team's deficit when he connected on an RBI single, plating junior
Michael Rahn (Sayville, N.Y.) and senior
John Galanoudis (Farmingdale, N.Y.). At the end of eight innings, Mercy led, 8-4.
In the bottom of the ninth, sophomore
Anthony Alberghina (Staten Island, N.Y.) grounded out to bring home senior
Kyle Van Duyne (Sayville, N.Y.) – Molloy's fifth run. Guzman scored via a wild pitch moments later to cut Mercy's lead to 8-6. However, that was the final result as the Lions ran out of late-inning, rally magic.
On the hill, sophomore starter
Bobby Kelly (Mineola, N.Y.) surrendered six runs (just one earned) on six hits over 6.1 innings pitched. Senior
Alex Brosnan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and Guzman combined for 2.2 frames of shutout baseball.
