Box Score UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Apr. 25, 2015) – On Saturday afternoon, the Molloy College baseball team rebounded in a big way following yesterday's doubleheader sweep at the hands of Mercy College. Today, the Lions cruised past the Mavericks, 20-1, at Mitchel Field in Uniondale, N.Y. to improve to 20-19 overall (8-11 East Coast Conference). With the loss, the Mavericks slip to 11-25 (5-14 ECC).
The final score indicates this game was all-Molloy and it started from the very beginning. Following a Senior Day honoring
John Galanoudis,
Alex Brosnan and
Kyle Van Duyne, the Lions scored three runs in the first frame. Galanoudis started it off with an RBI single before sophomore
Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.) plated two teammates with a single up the middle. In the second, Galanoudis singled home Van Duyne and junior
Nicholas Gonchar (Staten Island, N.Y.) before sophomore
Kevin Podell (Wantagh, N.Y.) plated Galanoudis and sophomore
Anthony Alberghina (Staten Island, N.Y.) with a single up the middle.
In the third frame, Alberghina reached on a fielder's choice, which allowed Gonchar and Van Duyne to come home. The monster third inning continued with a run-scoring single off Galanoudis' bat, RBI singles by Podell and freshman
Angelo Navetta (Staten Island, N.Y.), and a two-run single by Murphy. After three innings, Molloy led, 14-0.
In the fifth, Van Duyne drew a bases-loaded walk, and Gonchar recorded a sacrifice fly to plate Navetta. Two innings later, Gonchar cleared the bases with a three-run double to put Molloy ahead, 19-0. Freshman
Joseph Nastasi (South Salem, N.Y.) was responsible for Molloy's 20th and final run of the day when he singled home freshman
Jack McCarty (Huntington, N.Y.) in the eighth.
Mercy scored its lone run of the game in the ninth on an RBI single.
On the hill, Molloy starter
Alex Brosnan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) hurled a brilliant game, tossing the complete-game gem. He surrendered just one run on five hits, struck out 17 batters and walked none. With Brosnan's 17 punchouts today, and Spitzbarth's 17,
Ronald Bauer's eight and the bullpen's three yesterday, the Lions' pitching staff has combined to strike out 45 batters in the last 28.2 innings. Brosnan improved to 4-1 and now owns a 2.39 ERA for the season.
