Box Score 2 FLUSHING, N.Y. (Apr. 24, 2015) – On Thursday afternoon, the Molloy College softball team fell to Queens College in a pair of games, 15-14 and 10-1. With the losses, the Lions are now 22-23 overall and 17-8 in the East Coast Conference, while the Knights improve to 27-14 (19-4 ECC).
Game 1: Queens 15, Molloy 14In the first contest of the afternoon, Queens took a quick 1-0 lead, before the Lions scored seven unanswered runs in the next four innings. In the second, sophomore Erin Clinton (Long Beach, Calif.) had an RBI single. In the fourth frame, rookie Taylor Curran (Seaford, N.Y.) singled home a run, sophomore Ashley Fedor (Monroe, Conn.) recorded a bases-loaded walk, and junior Tracey Balinskas (Edison, N.J.) smacked a grand slam.
The Lions picked up two additional runs in the fifth inning via an Alexandra Russo (Coram, N.Y.) RBI double and a Fedor sacrifice fly to go up, 9-2. However, Queens plated six runs in the fifth to trim its deficit to 9-8. Molloy scored in the top of the sixth when Balinskas scored on a passed ball. In the bottom half of the inning, the Knights took a 12-10 advantage on one swing of the bat – a grand slam courtesy of Monique Roberge.
Molloy scored its final four runs in the seventh via a Victoria Gunnels (North Bellmore, N.Y.) grand slam. That dinger made it 14-12 in favor of Molloy. The Lions weren't able to hold the lead, however, as the Knights plated three runs in the bottom half of the seventh to win, 15-14.
Senior Brianne Catalano (Franklin Square, N.Y.) finished 4 for 4 with two runs scored, while Gunnels went 3 for 5 with four RBIs. Balinskas finished 1 for 3 with three runs scored and four RBIs.
Game 2: Queens 10, Molloy 1 (5 innings)
With just one run on two hits, Molloy's bats cooled off in the second game of the day. Molloy's lone run came across to score in the first inning when Balinskas cranked a solo homer to left field. The Knights scored their 10 runs in the first, third and fifth innings.
Sophomore Chelsea Hawks (Wading River, N.Y.) went three innings, giving up eight runs (three earned) on nine hits.
