Box Score 2 DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 24, 2015) – On Friday afternoon, the Molloy College baseball team headed across the bridge to Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. to open up an East Coast Conference series with Mercy College. The Mavericks took both games of the doubleheader today by the final scores of 4-3 and 5-3. Following the losses, the Lions dropped to 19-19 overall and 7-11 in the league, while the Mavericks improved to 11-24 (5-13 ECC).
Game 1: Mercy 4, Molloy 3
The Lions took an early 1-0 advantage when sophomore Kevin Podell (Wantagh, N.Y.) stole home in the second inning. The Mavericks tied the game two innings later when they reciprocated and stole home. In the fifth, Molloy went back on top when freshman Angelo Navetta (Staten Island, N.Y.) singled home sophomore Anthony Alberghina (Staten Island, N.Y.).
The Lions held that 2-1 lead from the fifth through the bottom of the eighth inning. Mercy knotted the game at 2-2 when the Mavericks scored due to a Molloy fielding error. The two squads headed to extra innings with neither team scoring in the ninth.
In the top of the 11th, Alberghina singled to left field, plating freshman Jack McCarty (Huntington, N.Y.) to go ahead, 3-2. However, in the bottom half of the frame, Mercy tied the game with an RBI single from Sal Palumbo. Three innings later, in the 14th frame, the Mavericks scored the game-winning run via a sacrifice fly.
On the hill, a fantastic start by junior Shea Spitzbarth (Staten Island, N.Y.) was wasted. Spitzbarth hurled 10 innings, giving up two runs (both unearned) and striking out an incredible 17 batters. Junior Deilyn Guzman (East Hampton, N.Y.) was strapped with the loss (2.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 3 Ks).
Game 2: Mercy 5, Molloy 3
Down 2-0 in the top of the second, Molloy junior Michael Rahn (Sayville, N.Y.) halved the score with a solo home run to left field. In the bottom half of the inning, a Mercy sacrifice fly put the Mavericks on top, 3-1. In the third, senior John Galanoudis (Farmingdale, N.Y.) reached on a dropped fly, which allowed senior Kyle Van Duyne (Sayville, N.Y.) to score.
A two-run homer in the fourth put the Mavericks ahead, 5-2, in the fourth frame. In the top of the seventh, Molloy earned one of those runs back when Guzman singled home sophomore Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.). However, that was all the Lions' offense could muster and Molloy fell, 5-3.
On the mound, sophomore Ronald Bauer (Hicksville, N.Y.) pitched 6.0 innings, surrendering five runs on three hits. He whiffed eight batters.
Head Coach Joe Fucarino and the Lions continue their ECC series with Mercy tomorrow when the two teams square off at Mitchel Field in Uniondale, N.Y. Tomorrow's contest is just a single game and will get underway at 12 p.m.
