Baseball Edged by Dominican, 9-8

Box Score POMONA, N.Y. (Apr. 22, 2015) - On Tuesday evening, the Molloy College baseball team fell to Dominican College in a non-conference battle at Provident Bank Park in Pomona, N.Y., 9-8, to drop to 19-17 overall. With the victory, the Chargers improved to 14-19.

Molloy took an early 2-0 lead in the opening two innings via an Anthony Alberghina (Staten Island, N.Y.) RBI groundout and a Nicholas Gonchar (Staten Island, N.Y.) sacrifice fly. Juniors Deilyn Guzman (East Hampton, N.Y.) and Michael Rahn (Sayville, N.Y.) scored on those plays, respectively.

The Lions, ahead 3-1 in the top of the third, were at it again in the batter's box scoring four additional runs. Alberghina scored via an error by the pitcher, sophomore Kevin Podell (Wantagh, N.Y.) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Rahn and senior Kyle Van Duyne (Sayville, N.Y.) doubled in a run apiece.

Molloy grabbed its seventh run of the game in the fourth when Guzman stole home.

The fourth, fifth and sixth innings spelled trouble for the Lions. Dominican scored eight runs over those innings to take a 9-7 lead heading into the top of the seventh. In the top of the ninth, senior John Galanoudis (Farmingdale, N.Y.) scored via a wild pitch to cut the Lions' deficit to just one run, however, Molloy wasn't able to scratch across any additional runs and fell to the Chargers, 9-8.

On the hill, freshman Anthony Catinella (Middle Village, N.Y.) received the start and gave up seven runs (five earned) in 5.1 innings pitched. He struck out four. Catinella put together his best performance of the year before he ran into trouble in the fifth frame. In relief, sophomore Sean Gordon (Levittown, N.Y.) was strapped with the loss (0.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 BB). Junior Peter Vath (Selden, N.Y.) hurled the final 2.2 innings of the game, giving up no runs and whiffing five batters.

Head Coach Joe Fucarino and the Lions return to the diamond on Friday, April 24 to play a doubleheader at Mercy College beginning at 1 p.m. in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.
