Softball Blanks ECC-Opponent Mercy, 6-0

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 17, 2015) – On Friday, the Molloy College softball team bettered its record to 20-20 overall and 15-5 in the East Coast Conference with a 6-0 shutout over Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. at Smith Field. With the loss, the Mavericks slip to 8-29 (7-13 ECC).

To kick off the scoring immediately, s
ophomore Ashley Fedor (Monroe, Conn.) deposited the fifth pitch of the game over the right centerfield fence for her sixth homer of the year. Three innings later, freshman Bernadette Mullane (Bellmore, N.Y.) doubled home senior Victoria Gunnels (North Bellmore, N.Y.) to put the Lions ahead, 2-0.

Molloy had its biggest inning of the game in the sixth. Freshman Brianna Dalton (Northampton, Pa.) started the frame off with a solo shot, followed by Mullane reaching on an error, which scored Gunnels. Molloy's sixth run was scored when rookie Nina Gaita (Eastport, N.Y.) scored via a wild pitch. 

In the circle, junior Tracey Balinskas (Edison, N.J.) threw the complete-game shutout, giving up just four hits. She struck out seven to improve to 10-8 overall. Her season's ERA is now 3.44.

Head Coach Susan Cassidy-Lyke and the Lions will have a quick turnaround with the Mavericks as they welcome Mercy to Bob Klein Field tomorrow beginning at 11 a.m.  Tomorrow's doubleheader will also serve as "Strikeout Cancer Day." The Molloy softball team will be partnering with the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) to raise funds for the National Foundation for Cancer Research.
