Women's Lacrosse Falls to St. Thomas Aquinas, 13-12

Box Score SPARKILL, N.Y. (Apr. 12, 2015) - The Molloy College women's lacrosse team dropped a close game versus the St.Thomas Aquinas College Spartans, 13-12, on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Spartans improve to 7-4 overall (3-1 East Coast Conference), while the Lions drop to 7-6 overall (2-4 ECC).

The Lions started the scoring with a goal from junior Katie O'Brien (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) at the 27:33 mark, but that lead be short-lived as the Spartans proceeded to reel off six straight goals. Molloy scored again to make it 6-2 after a free position goal from sophomore Cooper Sesselman (Lindenhurst, N.Y.). The Spartans added to its lead with two more goals to take an 8-2 lead, before the Lions ended the first half on a five-goal run to make the halftime score, 8-7. In that burst, the Lions received goal contributions from Sesselman twice, senior Casey Naab (Floral Park, N.Y.), graduate student Shannon Defliese (Garden City, N.Y.) and senior Meghan Orlando (Hicksville, N.Y.).

After the intermission, St. Thomas Aquinas scored twice to take a 10-7 advantage, before Molloy took one of those back when freshman Jessica Markowitz (Baldwin, N.Y.) popped one past the goalie to change the score to 10-8. The Spartans netted two more goals to make it 12-8. Molloy, yet again, answered back with another pair of goals from Sesselman to make it a 12-10 game. St. Thomas Aquinas concluded its scoring with one more goal at the 4:49 mark of the second half. Molloy recorded two more goals -- one each from Markowitz and Orlando -- to make it a 13-12 game, which was the final.

In the game, Sesselman finished with five goals and one assist, while Naab had one goal and one assist. In net for the Lions, senior Laura Vetter (Great River, N.Y.) made eight saves.

Head coach Tom Campolettano and the Lions return to action on April 18 when they travel to face Queens College at 12 p.m.
