Softball Tops Dowling in ECC Doubleheader, 10-0, 12-4

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. (Apr. 12, 2015) - The Molloy College softball team took both games of its doubleheader against Dowling College on Saturday afternoon, 10-0 (5 innings) and 12-4 (6 innings). With the wins, the Lions improve to 14-19 overall and 9-4 in East Coast Conference action, while the Golden Lions fall to 13-18-1 on the season (5-11 ECC ).

Game 1: Molloy 10, Dowling 0 (5 innings)
In Game 1, the Lions scored two runs in the third inning after a triple from senior Brianne Catalano (Franklin Square, N.Y.) plated freshman Alexandra Russo (Coram, N.Y.) and a sacrifice fly from freshman Olivia Banulski (Bristol, Conn.) In the fourth, the Lions scored two more runs via a sacrifice fly from freshman Sarah Rambo (Eagleville, Pa.) and via a Dowling fielding error. In the fifth inning, the Lions added another run via an RBI double from freshman Brianna Dalton (Northampton, Pa.). That base knock started a the six-run frame, which culminared with a three-run homer off Russo's bat.

For the game, sophomore Erin Clinton (Long Beach, Calif.)  led way going 3 for 3, along with junior Tracey Balinksas (Edison, N.J.), who went 2 for 2. Balinksas earned the win going five innings, giving up four hits and striking out four batters.

Game 2: Molloy 12, Dowling 4 (6 innings)
In the second game, the Lions found themselves down 3-0 in the first inning after two home runs from Crystal Tarango and Tammy Vermeulan. Molloy responded in the third after a single from Balinksas scored Catalano and sophomore Ashley Fedor (Monroe, Conn.) cut the deficit to 4-2. The Lions tied the contest after a Rambo fielder's choice combined with a Dowling fielding error plated Dalton and Balinskas. In the fourth inning, the Lions took over the action following a three-run home run from Balinksas, which gave the Lions a 7-4 lead. Molloy also scored after Clinton reached on a error by the shortstop -- that scored senior Victoria Gunnels (North Bellmore, N.Y.). The Lions grabbed a 10-4 lead and never looked back. Molloy scored two more runs in the sixth inning to enact the run-rule and closed out the bottom half of the inning to win, 12-4.
