#9 Men's Lacrosse Bested by #13/11 Mercy, 15-11

Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 12, 2015) - The #9 Molloy College men's lacrosse team fell to the #13/11 Mercy College Mavericks on Saturday afternoon, 15-11, in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.  With the win, the Mavericks improve to 9-2 overall (4-1 East Coast Conference), while the Lions fall to 7-3 overall and 2-3 in the league.

In the first quarter, the Mavericks scored the first two goals of the game to lead 2-0 before Molloy senior attack Tom Engelhardt (Bethpage, N.Y.) found the back of the cage to make it 2-1. The Mavericks, however, went on to record four straight goals to take a 6-1 advantage heading into the second stanza.

In the second period, the Lions received markers from Engelhardt and senior attackman Joe Leonard (Hicksville, N.Y.) to cut Mercy's lead to 8-3.

Following the intermission, the Lions started the third quarter with two straight goals from Leonard and junior midfielder Peter Clark (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) to cut into Mercy's lead, 8-5. The Mavericks took those goals back by scoring twice to harbor a 10-5 advantage. Yet again, the Lions answered back thanks to Engelhardt and Leonard's goals.

Ahead 10-7, the Mavericks went on a four-goal run that spanned the end of the third period and continued into the fourth to take a 14-7 lead. Leonard netted his fourth goal of the game, which the Lions eventually followed up with a three-goal spurt to trim the Maverick's lead to 15-11. However, there was no more offense to be had and that score held for the final. In that final run the Lions received goals from Engelhardt, sophomore attack Connor Slane (North Babylon, N.Y.) and Clark.

In net for the Lions, freshman Ryan Toomey (Hicksville, N.Y.) made 17 saves.

Offensively, the Lions were led by Engelhardt and Leonard, who scored four times each, while Clark had two goals. Junior midfielder Austin Valenti (Baldwin, N.Y.) dished out three assists.

Head Coach Eric Petrullo and the Lions return to action on Wednesday, April 15 when they face Dominican College starting at 4 p.m.  That game will take place in Hillburn, N.Y. at the Torne Valley Sports Complex.
