Baseball Cruises Past Caldwell, 20-9

Box Score UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Mar. 31, 2015) - On Tuesday afternoon, the Molloy College baseball team braved the wet, rainy and raw weather conditions to host Caldwell University at Mitchel Field in Uniondale, N.Y.  Following a 20-hit performance, the Lions defeated the Cougars by the final score of 20-9.  Eleven different players recorded at least one hit, while 10 different players notched at least one RBI. With the win, the Lions are now 10-12 overall, while the Cougars dropped to 2-14 on the year.

Caldwell went up 3-0 in the top of the first, before Molloy took two of those runs back in the bottom half. Two more runs in the second gave Caldwell a 5-2 lead -- which was the final advantage the Cougars held on the afternoon. Molloy posted a "5" and a "6" on the scoreboard's linescore for the second and third innings, respectively, to take a commanding 13-5 lead. The only innings Molloy didn't score in were the fifth and seventh.

In the batter's box for the Lions, freshman infielder Jack McCarty (Huntington, N.Y.) went 4 for 5 with three RBIs and four runs scored, while senior outfielder John Galanoudis (Farmingdale, N.Y.) finished 3 for 4 with two runs scored. Sophomore outfielder Anthony Alberghina (Staten Island, N.Y.), sophomore infielder Kevin Podell (Wantagh, N.Y.), freshman first baseman Angelo Navetta (Staten Island, N.Y.) and sophomore shortstop Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.) had two hits each. Alberghina drove in three runs, while Navetta recorded two RBIs.

On the hill, sophomore Matthew Kelleher (Baldwin, N.Y.) earned the win in relief, as he threw two innings, surrendering four runs (one earned). Rookie Joseph Nastasi (South Salem, N.Y.), junior Shea Spitzbarth (Staten Island, N.Y.), junior Deilyn Guzman (East Hampton, N.Y.) and sophomore Sean Gordon (Levittown, N.Y.) combined to hurl five shutout innings. Molloy pitchers struck out 11 batters on the day.

Head Coach Joe Fucarino and the Lions return to the diamond on Thursday, Apr. 2 to host Dominican College beginning at 3:30 p.m.
