Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Mar. 29, 2015) - The #10 Molloy College men's lacrosse team pulled off the upset today, defeating #8 Seton Hill University, 7-6. The go-ahead goal was fired in by senior attack
Joe Leonard (Hicksville, N.Y) with just 22 seconds left in the game. With the win, the Lions improve to 6-1 overall, while the Griffins fall to 6-2 overall.
The Griffins opened the scoring after a goal by Eric Hultgren nine minutes into the first period of play. The Lions responded with a goal by junior
Austin Valenti (Baldwin, N.Y.) to tie the game at 1-1. Seton Hill then rattled off three straight goals to take a 4-1 lead. The Lions however, fought back earning two goals from senior midfielder
Tom Engelhardt (Bethpage, N.Y.) and sophomore
Connor Slane (North Babylon, N.Y.) to cut their team's deficit to 4-3 at the 2:02 mark of the second quarter. That would be the score at halftime.
In the third period, the Lions tied the game at 4-all after Engelhardt's second goal on the day. The Lions ended up taking their first lead of the game courtesy of Valenti's second marker of the afternoon. That lead was short-lived, however, as the Griffins tied the game at 5-all after a goal from Zack Rusch. Rusch scored another goal to then give the the visitors a 6-5 lead with 13:54 remaining in the contest.
The Lions responded in dramatic fashion, tying the game at 6-6 with a goal from junior midfielder
Peter Clark (Rockville Centre, N.Y.). Then, in an incredible turn of events, the Lions found the go-ahead and final goal of the game with 22 seconds left. Leonard, from about 15 yards out, angled his back to the goalie, spun, and ripped a shot that sailed right past the cageminder's left shoulder to nail the twine.
For the game, Engelhardt and Valenti each had two goals, while Leonard, Slane and Clark each netted one. In net for the Lions, and not to be forgotten, was freshman goalie
Ryan Toomey (Hicksville, N.Y.), who made 13 saves. If it wasn't for a couple of late, critical stops by the rookie netminder, the Lions wouldn't have had the chance to hold the Griffins' offense at-bay and allow Leonard to score the game-winner.
Head Coach
Eric Petrullo and the Lions return to action on Saturday, April 4 when they host #3 NYIT at 3 p.m.
