Women's Lacrosse Edged by #17 Dowling, 13-12

Box Score BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. (Mar. 25, 2015) - On Wednesday evening, the Molloy College women's lacrosse team fell to #17 Dowling College in Brookhaven, N.Y. by the final score of 13-12. With the win, the Golden Lions improved to 7-2 overall and 3-0 in the East Coast Conference, while the Lions fell to 3-4 (0-2 ECC).

After Dowling went up 1-0 two minutes into the contest, Molloy reeled off four straight goals over a four-minute span. Sophomore midfielder Cooper Sesselman (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) netted the first two of those four goals, while graduate student Shannon Defliese (Garden City, N.Y.) and senior Casey Naab (Floral Park, N.Y.) had the other two tallies. Dowling then took two of those goals back to cut its deficit to 4-3. Following that, Molloy scored another three markers to take a 7-3 lead. The Lions received markers from freshman midfielder Jessica Markowitz (Baldwin, N.Y.), junior midfielder Katie O'Brien (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and Sesselman, as Sesselman recorded the hat trick. The Golden Lions notched one more goal before haltime. At the intermission, Molloy led, 7-4.

In the second half, Dowling scored two minutes into the game to trim its deficit to 7-5. Molloy put together another spurt of three straight goals to go ahead, 10-5. Senior midfielder Meghan Orlando (Hicksville, N.Y.), Sesselman and Markowitz were responsible for the three markers. Over the subsequent 24 minutes, the Golden Lions recorded eight consecutive goals to take a 13-10 advantage. Jackie Andersen had four of those goals, while Allie Merrill netted a pair.

Sophomore Alexa Watson (North Massapequa, N.Y.) and Markowitz scored a goal each in the final 1:19 of the game to nearly tie the game, but the Golden Lions secured the 13-12 victory.

For Molloy, Sesselman scored four goals, while Markowitz had three. Orlando finished with one goal and two assists.

Head Coach Tom Campolettano and the Lions return to action on Friday night to host Wilmington University of Delaware at 6 p.m.
