Box Score 2 UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Mar. 22, 2015) - On Sunday, following a slew of re-schedulings due to inclement weather, the Molloy College baseball team was finally able to get in two of its games against East Coast Conference-foe St. Thomas Aquinas College at Mitchel Field in Uniondale, N.Y. In Game 1 of today's doubleheader, the Spartans bested the Lions, 14-9, and then defeated Molloy once again in Game 2, 4-2. With the wins, St. Thomas Aquinas is now 5-4-1 overall and 2-0 in the league, while the Lions fell to 5-9 on the season (0-2 ECC).
Game 1: St. Thomas Aquinas 14, Molloy 9The opening game of today's doubleheader was all offense. The Lions scored four runs in the first inning via a
Kevin Podell (Wantagh, N.Y.) RBI single and a three-run triple by freshman
Angelo Navetta (Staten Island, N.Y.). The Spartans, however, scored the game's next 14 runs over the next eight innings to take a 14-4 lead. Molloy scored five in the ninth inning to make a valiant comeback effort, but ultimately lost. In that ninth frame, freshman
Elijah Leerdam (Jamaica, N.Y.) walked with the bases loaded, followed by another Podell RBI single, a
John Galanoudis (Farmingdale, N.Y.) RBI single, a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to Navetta, and an RBI fielder's choice for sophomore
Ronald Bauer (Hicksville, N.Y.).
On the hill, junior starter
Shea Spitzbarth (Staten Island, N.Y.) struggled, allowing seven runs in six innings. He struck out eight and walked four.
Game 2: St. Thomas Aquinas 4, Molloy 2This contest had more of a pitcher's duel feel to it as the game saw just three runs in the opening five innings. Molloy's J. Galanoudis drove home Podell with a sacrifice fly in the first inning to give his team a 1-0 lead. STAC answered right back in the bottom half of the inning scoring due to a Molloy fielding error. Molloy then earned its second run of the game in the second inning when Navetta scored on a wild pitch. St. Thomas Aquinas scored two more runs in the sixth and eighth frames to go on to win, 4-2.
On the mound for Molloy, senior
Alex Brosnan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) hurled eight innings, giving up four runs (three earned), while striking out eight batters.
Head Coach
Joe Fucarino and the Lions will close out their four-game series with the Spartans on Monday. The ECC doubleheader will begin at 4 p.m. from Mitchel Field in Uniondale, N.Y.
