Softball Falls to Barry in Doubleheader, 9-2, 5-4

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (Mar. 18, 2015) - On Wednesday afternoon in Miami Shores, Fla., the Molloy College softball squad was swept by Barry University in twinbill action, 9-2 and 5-4, to close out its 2015 Florida Spring Training Trip. With the win, the Bucs improved to 22-5, while the Lions fell to 4-12 overall.

Game 1: Barry 9, Molloy 2
Barry scored six times in the opening inning to take a quick lead. Molloy put its first run on the board in the fourth inning when senior Victoria Gunnels (North Bellmore, N.Y.) brought home fellow senior Brenda Lee (Corona, Calif.) with a sacrifice fly. Sophomore Ashley Fedor (Monroe, Conn.) added the Lions' second run of the ballgame when she singled to left field, plating junior Tracey Balinskas (Edison, N.J.). Those two runs cut Molloy's deficit to 8-2. The Bucs tacked one another run in the fifth and went on to win, 9-2.

In the circle, junior Samantha Sauer (Plainview, N.Y.) started for the Lions and lasted 2.2 innings. She surrendered eight runs, although just three were earned. Out of the bullpen, sophomore Chelsea Hawks (Wading River, N.Y.) and rookie Makayla Harris (Berlin, Conn.) combined for a 3.1-inning, one-run performance (unearned).

Game 2: Barry 5, Molloy 4
Molloy took the first lead of Game 2 in the very first inning when Balinskas notched an RBI single to center field, allowing Fedor to score. Barry answered with two runs in the bottom half of the first to go up, 2-1. In the third frame, Molloy scored three times with the first coming via an error. After senior Brianne Catalano (Franklin Square, N.Y.) touched home plate, Lee doubled down the left field line bringing home Fedor, while Gunnels repeated the same base hit, plating Lee. The Lions grabbed a 4-2 lead.

A two-run homer in the third tied the game for Barry before the Bucs found their insurance run in the fourth inning. An RBI double down the left field line plated Barry's fifth and deciding run.

For Molloy, Balinskas gave up five runs in 3+ innings. On in relief, Hawks hurled three shutout frames.

Head Coach Susan Cassidy-Lyke and the Lions return to the diamond on Wednesday, March 25 when they host Dowling College and open up East Coast Conference-play.
