Baseball Drops Florida Finale to Caldwell, 11-3

Box Score BOCA RATON, Fla. (Mar. 17, 2015) - On Tuesday, the Molloy College baseball team wrapped up its 2015 Florida Spring Training Trip at the Lynn Invitational with an 11-3 loss to Caldwell University in Boca Raton, Fla.  With the loss, the Lions are now 5-7, while the Cougars improved to 2-3 overall.

Caldwell scored five times in the second inning and once more in the third to take an early 6-0 advantage. Molloy plated its first run of the game in the top of the fifth when graduate student John Galanoudis (Farmingdale, N.Y.) singled in junior Deilyn Guzman (East Hampton, N.Y.). The Cougars took that run right back in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single of their own.

Down 7-2 in the top of the sixth, Molloy rookie Elijah Leerdam (Jamaica, N.Y.) doubled down the left field line, allowing freshman Angelo Navetta (Staten Island, N.Y.) to score. Four more runs for Caldwell in the sixth frame didn't help the Lions as the Cougars mounted an 11-2 lead. The Lions scored once more in the ninth as Guzman rushed home on a wild pitch.

For the Lions, rookie Anthony Catinella (Middle Village, N.Y.) started on the hill and struggled, lasting 1.1 innings. He surrendered four runs on two hits. Molloy saw six other relievers enter in from the bullpen with the last two -- freshman Peter Bellina (Staten Island, N.Y.) and sophomore Matthew Kelleher (Baldwin, N.Y.) -- throwing scoreless innings in the seventh and the eighth.

Head Coach Joe Fucarino and the Lions return to New York to take on St. Thomas Aquinas College on Friday, March 20 beginning at 3:30 p.m. That game will be played at the Mitchel Field Athletic Complex in Uniondale, N.Y., with the Spartans serving as the home team.
