Spitzbarth Rolls in Baseball's 12-1 Victory Versus Adelphi

Box Score BOCA RATON, Fla. (Mar. 16, 2015) - At Lynn University on Monday, Molloy College junior starting pitcher Shea Spitzbarth (Staten Island, N.Y.) made his 2015 debut and didn't disappoint. The Staten Island product fired seven shutout innings, striking out 12 batters to help the Lions to a 12-1 win over Adelphi University. Spitzbarth surrendered only five hits. With the triumph, Molloy is now 5-6 overall, while the Panthers fell to 1-4.

Molloy's juggernaut offense continued to roll in the early portion of its 2015 campaign. The Lions jumped on the scoreboard in the very first inning. Junior Michael Rahn (Sayville, N.Y.) singled in sophomore Anthony Alberghina (Staten Island, N.Y.). In that same inning, graduate student John Galanoudis (Farmingdale, N.Y.) scored via a wild pitch to help the Lions take a 2-0 lead versus the Panthers. In the second inning, junior Deilyn Guzman (East Hampton, N.Y.) grounded into a double play, but allowed fellow junior Kyle Van Duyne (Sayville, N.Y.) to touch home plate. Molloy then went ahead 4-0 when Alberghina singled home sophomore Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.).

In the fifth, freshman Angelo Navetta (Staten Island, N.Y.) joined the scoring frenzy with an RBI single to plate Rahn. Molloy scored twice in the sixth (Van Duyne and Guzman scored via errors) and twice in the seventh (a Murphy RBI double and a two-run single from Guzman), before Adelphi scored its first run of the game. Molloy took an 11-1 lead in the eighth when sophomore Austin Nieves (Glendale, N.Y.) scored on a wild pitch. The Lions plated their final run of the afternoon when freshman Elijah Leerdam (Jamaica, N.Y.) drove in junior Nicholas Gonchar (Staten Island, N.Y.) with a sacrifice fly.

Out of the bullpen, junior Peter Vath (Selden, N.Y.) and sophomore Sean Gordon (Levittown, N.Y.) combined for two innings of one-run ball (although it was unearned).

Head Coach Joe Fucarino and the Lions return to action tomorrow as they conclude their 2015 Spring Training Trip. Molloy will square off against Caldwell University at 11 a.m.  LiveStats will be available on MolloyLions.com.
