Women's Lacrosse Falters at Roberts Wesleyan, 14-12

Box Score ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Mar. 15, 2015) - On Saturday, the Molloy College women's lacrosse squad was upended by East Coast Conference-opponent Roberts Wesleyan College, 14-12 in Rochester, N.Y. With the victory, the Redhawks improved to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in league play, while the Lions slipped to 2-3 on the year (0-1 in the ECC).

The Lions jumped on the scoreboard with the first three goals of the game. From the 24:11 to 23:03 mark of the first half -- just one minute and eight seconds in duration -- Molloy netted three goals all courtesy of sophomore midfielder Cooper Sesselman (Lindenhurst, N.Y.). Sesselman earned a hat trick just under two minutes gone by in the game. Senior Meghan Orlando (Hicksville, N.Y.) assisted on the first one, while junior Katie O'Brien (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) assisted on the third.

The Redhawks, however, went on a 7-2 run to take a 7-5 lead at the intermission. Molloy's pair of goals were recorded by graduate student Shannon Defliese (Garden City, N.Y.) and O'Brien. Both were unassisted.

Following halftime, Molloy and Roberts Wesleyan exchanged goals, with the Lions finding the back of the cage more often -- to take an 11-10 lead with 7:02 remaining in the game. Defliese scored her second of the game at the 24:12 interval, while O'Brien netted her second six minutes later. Sophomore Alexa Watson (North Massapequa, N.Y.) and freshman Jessica Markowitz (Baldwin, N.Y.) joined the scoring frenzy, before Sesselman tallied her fourth marker of the game. Markowitz added the go-ahead goal to put Molloy ahead, 11-10.

The Redhawks scored twice more in the subsequent five minutes to take a 12-11 lead. With just 1:18 remaining in regulation, Molloy tied the game at 12-all with a goal from Markowitz -- completing her hat trick for the afternoon.

However, Roberts Wesleyan scored a man-up goal at the 2:42 mark of the first overtime session to take the advantage back. The Redhawks then added an insurance goal in the second overtime to seal the 14-12 win.

For the game, Markowitz finished with three goals and one assist, while Sesselman netted four goals. Orlando dished out four assists, while O'Brien and Defliese combined for four tallies.

In the cage for Molloy, senior goalie Laura Vetter (Great River, N.Y.) made seven saves in the loss.

Head Coach Tom Campolettano and the Lions return to the field on Thursday, March 19 to host Chestnut Hill College at 6 p.m.  LiveStats and a complete audio/video broadcast will be available right here on MolloyLions.com.
