Baseball Splits Home Opener Doubleheader With Le Moyne

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Mar. 11, 2015) - On Wednesday, the Molloy College baseball team said goodbye to all the snow and welcomed in the start of another season at Mitchel Field in Uniondale, N.Y.  The Lions hosted an afternoon doubleheader with Le Moyne College, taking the first game by the score of 3-1, before falling to the Dolphins in Game Two, 3-2. With the action, Molloy is now 2-4 overall, while the Dolphins are now 4-7.

Game 1: Molloy 3, Le Moyne 1
In the opening game, the Lions received an all-around great effort from its pitching staff. Sophomore Bobby Kelly (Mineola, N.Y.), sophomore Sean Gordon (Levittown, N.Y.) and junior Peter Vath (Selden, N.Y.) blanked the Dolphins over the first six innings, striking out three. Offensively, Molloy jumped on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second when sophomore Anthony Alberghina (Staten Island, N.Y.) drove in junior Michael Rahn (Sayville, N.Y.) with an RBI groundout.

Three innings later, Alberghina plated freshman Angelo Navetta (Staten Island, N.Y.) with a single up the middle. In the sixth, Rahn rounded out the scoring with an RBI groundout, bringing home junior Deilyn Guzman (East Hampton, N.Y.).

Senior Alex Brosnan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) -- normally starting a game for the Lions -- came in on relief and while he surrendered a run, went on to lock down the save (1). Gordon earned the win (2-0).

Game 2: Le Moyne 3, Molloy 2
In the second contest, the Lions grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth via RBI singles from Rahn and freshman Elijah Leerdam (Jamaica, N.Y.). The Dolphins took those two runs back in the fifth when they tied the game on an RBI double and a sacrifice fly. Another sacrifice fly in the sixth would be all the insurance Le Moyne required to seal the victory.

On the hill for Molloy, sophomore Ronald Bauer (Hicksville, N.Y.) went three scoreless innings to begin the game.

Head Coach Joe Fucarino and the Lions return to the diamond on Friday when they make their way down to Florida for a six-game road trip in Lantana, West Palm Beach and Boca Raton.
