Women's Basketball Drops Heartbreaking Overtime Season Finale to Dowling, 82-80

Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Feb. 28, 2015) - On a day when the Molloy College women's basketball team honored its five seniors, the Lions dropped a heartbreaker in overtime to Dowling College, 82-80. The Lions end the season with a mark of 11-16 overall and 7-13 in East Coast Conference action, while the Golden Lions finished at 5-21 overall and 5-15 in conference play.

Before the game, the Lions' women's basketball program honored its five graduating seniors: Megan Lonergan (Rockville Centre, N.Y.), Sabrina Padro (Bronx, N.Y.), Nicole Arnone (Staten Island, N.Y.), Allison Smith (Blairstown, N.J.) and Taylor Kenney (Wantagh, N.Y.).

The first half of the contest played witness to a meek offensive effort. Dowling started off the game with an 11-1 lead. However, Molloy eventually stormed back to tie it and take the lead at halftime, 27-21.

In the second period, play was tight and saw three lead changes and two ties. The Lions led by as many as 15 points at the 13:24 mark, which was the highwater mark for the game. The Lions, however, saw their six-point lead disappear towards the end of the game. With less than two seconds in regulation and Molloy leading 69-66, Dowling senior Christina Verrelle chucked up a three-pointer, sinking it to send the game into overtime.

Unfortunately, the Lions would end up falling in the overtime session, 82-80.

Overall, the Lions had five players in double figures including three seniors: Smith (18 points, 14 rebounds), Arnone (10 points) and Padro (12 points). Also adding double-digit scoring was junior guard Alexia O'Connor (Centerport, N.Y.), who netted 12, and sophomore guard Maggie Salomone  (Narrangansett, R.I.), who added 10 off the bench.

Dowling was paced by Verrelle, who scored 32 points and corralled 14 boards.

This now concludes the 2014-15 campaign for Head Coach Kate Lynch and the Lions. Stay tuned to MolloyLions.com and @MolloyLions for the program's offseason news, notes and updates.
