Baseball Secures First Win of Season Versus Nyack, 8-4

Box Score MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (Feb. 23, 2015) - On Sunday down in Myrtle Beach, S.C., the Molloy College baseball team earned its first win of the 2015 campaign by doubling up Nyack College, 8-4. With the win, the Lions are now 1-3 overall, while the Warriors fell to 0-4 on the young season.

After falling behind early, 2-0, the Lions plated six runs in the bottom of the first inning. A pair of RBI singles from junior Michael Rahn (Sayville, N.Y.) and senior left fielder John Galanoudis (Farmingdale, N.Y.) started off the scoring frenzy. Those were followed by a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and then a two-run single from freshman right fielder Elijah Leerdam (Jamaica, N.Y.). Fellow freshman Jack McCarty (Huntington, N.Y.) concluded the scoring with an RBI single, bringing home senior catcher Kyle Van Duyne (Sayville, N.Y.).

Nyack grabbed one of those runs back in the top of the fourth, but Molloy scored another two in the sixth inning. McCarty picked up another RBI single, which was followed by a sacrifice fly from sophomore center fielder Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.).

Freshman starting pitcher Anthony Catinella (Middle Village, N.Y.) went the first 3.1 innings, giving up three runs on four hits. Sophomore reliever Sean Gordon (Levittown, N.Y.) came in for the next 3.2 frames and gave up just one hit. Following one inning by freshman Shawn Klotsche (Wantagh, N.Y.), junior Deilyn Guzman (East Hampton, N.Y.) finished the contest with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Head Coach Joe Fucarino and the Lions return to the diamond this weekend when they begin a three-game series with Wilmington University (Del). On Saturday, February 28, the Lions and Wildcats will play a single game at 3:30 p.m., followed by a doubleheader on Sunday, March 1 beginning at 12 p.m.  All three games are scheduled to be played at Harford Community College in Bel Air, Md.
