Men's Lacrosse Trounces Saint Anselm in Season Opener, 17-6

Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Feb. 21, 2015) - On a frigid winter Saturday in Rockville Centre, N.Y., the Molloy College men's lacrosse sticks sure didn't take too long to heat up as the Lions cruised past Saint Anselm College, 17-6, in the 2015 season opener at the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex. With the win, the Lions are now 1-0, while the Hawks slipped to 0-1 overall.

Molloy jumped out to an early 2-0 lead when senior attack Tom Engelhardt (Bethpage, N.Y.) and junior midfielder Peter Clark (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) scored their first goals of the year. They also assisted on each other's. The Hawks took one of those goals back at the 7:12 mark of the first quarter, before an illegal equipment penalty put the Lions man-down for three unreleaseable minutes. The Hawks took advantage of that miscue as St. Anselm scored twice within 30 seconds to take a 3-2 lead.

The second quarter -- and the rest of the game for that matter -- was all Molloy. In the second period, the Lions scored six times to take an 8-3 lead. Engelhardt scored three times in the quarter, while freshman midfielder T.J. Kilmetis (Hicksville, N.Y.) netted his first collegiate goal. Senior attack Joe Leonard (Hicksville, N.Y.) notched his first of the season as well.

Following the intermission, Molloy continued to pack on the goals with four more from Leonard and one each from senior Sal Geneva (Hicksville, N.Y.), junior Tom Graef (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) and senior Tom Turner (East Rockaway, N.Y.). The Lions would add a couple of more in the fourth to go on to win, 17-6.

In all for Molloy, Leonard led the way with seven points (5 G, 2 A), while Engelhardt had six points (4 G, 2 A). Sal Geneva had a goal and two assists, Turner had two goals and one assist, and Clark had four points (2 G, 2 A). Graef scored twice, while Kilmetis -- who won nine of 18 faceoffs -- scored once and dished out an assist.

In net for the Lions was freshman goalie Ryan Toomey (Hicksville, N.Y.), who had an outstanding collegiate debut. He made 10 saves on the day. In the cage for the Hawks, James O'Reilly stopped eight shots in the loss.

Head Coach Eric Petrullo and the Lions return to action on Saturday, Feb. 28 when they travel to Rochester, N.Y. to play Roberts Wesleyan College at 3 p.m.
