Box Score MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (Feb. 20, 2015) - Seeking warmer weather to finally feel like it's baseball season, the Molloy College Lions headed down to Myrtle Beach, S.C. for the annual Northeast Challenge at the Ripken Experience. Despite a remarkable eight shutout innings from senior starter
Alex Brosnan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) -- he only gave up two hits -- the Lions found trouble in the 11th frame and lost to Chestnut Hill College in the 2015 campaign opener, 6-1. With the win, the Griffins are now 1-0 overall, while the Lions fell to 0-1.
There was zero offense -- a total of four hits between both clubs -- for the first nine innings of this game. Both starting pitchers were dominant as the lumber looked to get going. In the top of the 10th, Chestnut Hill scored the game's first run on a fielding error. Molloy answered right back in the bottom half of the frame thanks to a
Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.) sacrifice fly that plated pinch runner
Anthony Galanoudis (Farmingdale, N.Y.).
In the top of the 11th, an RBI single and a bases-clearing triple doomed the Lions as relievers
Peter Vath (Selden, N.Y.) and
Sean Gordon (Levittown, N.Y.) ran into trouble surrendering five runs on four hits. The Molloy bats went quietly in the bottom half of the inning and the Griffins took home the win.
Brosnan kicked off his senior campaign on the right foot with eight scoreless innings of two-hit ball, striking out seven. Vath was strapped with the loss to fall to 0-1.
