Women's Basketball Completes Wire-To-Wire Domination of Mercy, 69-40

Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Dec. 9, 2015) – The Molloy College women's basketball team started their first trip through the East Coast Conference with ease, as they traveled to Dobbs Ferry and soundly defeated Mercy College 69-40 on Wednesday night. The Lions are now 2-4 on the season and 1-0 in ECC play while Mercy falls to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in conference competition

The Lions dominated the first quarter in scoring 24-11. They also went 13-for-28 (46.4%) in field goals made during the first half, while scoring 37 points in total. In the second half, the Lions went 14-for-33 (42.4%) in field goals made. In comparison, the Mavericks went 8-for-28 (28.6%) in the first half in field goals made, and 6-for-33 (18.2%) in the second half.

The result seemed inevitable right when senior forward Ally Leftridge (Melville, N.Y.) scored the first points of the game with 8:25 to play in the opening quarter, and Molloy never looked back and never lost the lead. The Melville senior scored 16 points with five rebounds in the game. Senior guard Alexia O'Connor (Centerport, N.Y.) had a phenomenal first half, scoring 15 of her 18 points during that time. The Centerport native was also six-for-eight from the field and picked up five rebounds. Coming off the bench, junior guard Aliyah McDonald (Hempstead, N.Y.) contributed with 12 points, seven rebounds, and three assists, while shooting four-of-seven from the field. The maroon and white also held Mercy senior forward Deasia Goodson (Freeport, N.Y.) in check despite her 14 points and 14 rebounds. Goodson was just 6-for-24 from the field while no other Maverick player took more than seven field goal attempts in the contest.

The Lions jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first quarter with O'Connor grabbing five points on her own, as Leftridge and fellow senior Alex Hampton (Baldwin, N.Y.) contributed the other five points in the early run. Mercy got within three after a Goodson lay-up midway through the frame made the score 10-7, but O'Connor scored eight points in the final five minutes to lead Molloy to the 24-11 edge. Molloy opened the second quarter with another 5-0 spurt on a three-ball from Hampton and a lay-up by senior Kimani Jackson (Dix Hills, N.Y.), stretching the lead to 18 points at the time. McDonald ended the first half with Molloy's final four points as the Lions went into the locker room up 37-21 after 20 minutes of play.

In the second half, Mercy scored five of the first eight points to get within 16 at a 40-24 deficit with 7:46 remaining, but the Lions saved their most impressive rally for the remainder of the frame. Molloy opened up a 19-5 run, with Jackson and McDonald combining for ten of the points to get the lead to a 30-point edge at 59-29 through three quarters. With the game in hand, the Lions turned to the bench to close out the team's first conference victory of the season. Junior guard Maggie Salomone (Narragansett, R.I.) knocked down a three-pointer against her former team, while sophomore forward Sabrina Rodriguez (Shelton, Conn.) contributed with a block on defense and a rebound, as well. Junior forward Brianna Perlmutter (Brooklyn, N.Y.) continued her dominance on the blocks with an eight-rebound performance while freshman guard/forward Bridget Sharnick (Shelton, Conn.) pulled down four boards in the win.

Head Coach Joe Pellicane and the Molloy College women's basketball team return to the hardwood on Saturday (Dec. 12) when they take on another East Coast Conference rival in Saint Thomas Aquinas College. The game is at 1 P.M. in Sparkill, N.Y. Live stats will be available on www.MolloyLions.com
