SINKING SPRING, Pa. (Oct. 18, 2015) - The Molloy College women's bowling team journeyed to the Kutztown University Fall Baker Invitational to play its first-ever NCAA bowling match at Berks Lanes in Pennsylvania on Saturday. Making up the squad for the Lions are 5 enthusiastic freshmen:
Afsha Malik (Albertson, N.Y.),
Treasure Smith (Brooklyn, N.Y),
Sydney Kelly (Greenlawn, N.Y.),
Kaliann Terry (Levittown, N.Y.), and
Maria Lucente (Elmont, N.Y.). The maroon and white played in five matches utilizing the Baker-style format of scoring on the day.
Match one saw the Lions take on the Mavericks of Medaille College. The Lions held a 149-134 lead in the first game, but the Mavericks roared back to take the match by 147 pins (711-564). Coppin State University, a Division I opponent out of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, awaited Molloy in the second match of the day. The Eagles opened an early 32-pin lead and the Lions were unable to rebound dropping the match by a 698-554 final score. The third match marked a milestone as Molloy faced its first ranked opponent in program history. The Lions took on No. 17 Delaware State University and the wide-eyed Lions took away some knowledge of how good teams in women's collegiate bowling can truly be. The Hornets had too much fire power and felled the Lions by 391 pins, 903-512.
The fourth contest of the day for Molloy proved to be a "Lions vs. Lions"match-up as the maroon and white faced the Nittany Lions of Penn State-Altoona. Molloy briefly put a scare into the opponents, trailing game one by 7 pins and facing a 25-pin deficit after game 3. The Nittany Lions would eventually pull away, however, to a 680-535 victory. In the Lions' last match, the Bobcats of Thiel College came calling and showcased their experience on the boards by pulling off a 235-pin triumph (792-557).
