Box Score OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Jan. 17, 2015) - The Molloy College women's basketball squad lost to the New York Institute of Technology Bears this afternoon in a close game, 71-67. The loss drops the Lions to 5-9 overall and 1-6 in East Coast Conference play, while NYIT improves to 12-2 on the year and 7-0 in the league.
In the first half, the Lions were down 36-29 to the Bears, following an eight-point output from senior guard/forward Nicole Arnone (Staten Island, N.Y.), which led the team. Off the bench, sophomore guard Maggie Salomone (Narrangsett, R.I.) contributed six points. Also netting six points for the Lions was junior guard/forward Kimani Jackson (Dix Hils, N.Y.).
The Lions would storm out to a five-point lead to kickoff the contest, but the Bears answered back never letting the Lions regain the lead in the first half, as well as in the entire second stanza. The Bears would lead by as many as 11 points at the 1:56 mark in the first half.
In the second period, the Lions impressed by staying in the contest against the league-leading Bears. Molloy eventually drew to within two points of its deficit at the 16:18 mark, but the Bears took over once again extending their lead to nine points by the 11:26 spot.
For Molloy, Jackson paced the squad with 20 points (5-15 shooting) and was a perfect 9-9 from the charity stripe. Junior Ally Leftridge (Melville, N.Y.) poured in 15 points and grabbed six rebounds, while senior Allison Smith (Blairstown, N.J.) added 10 rebounds and four points. Salomone finished with 14 points on 4-14 shooting.
Leading the way for the Bears was Dina Ragab who racked up 32 points and 10 rebounds.
Head Coach Kate Lynch and the Lions return to action against the Knights of Queens College on Tuesday, January 20. The opening tipoff is slated for 5 p.m.
