Softball Drops ECC Championship to No. 17 LIU Post

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (May 4, 2014) - On Sunday, the Molloy College softball team dropped two games on the final day of the East Coast Conference Championship to No. 17 LIU Post, by the final scores of 17-7 and 16-7. With the losses, the Pioneers improved to 44-8 overall and earned the league's title, while the Lions slipped to 30-22-1 to finish the season.

Game 1: LIU Post 17, Molloy 7

Down 3-0 in the first inning, senior outfielder Dayna White (East Islip, N.Y.) smacked an RBI-double to left center. The Lions then took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the second when senior shortstop Nicolette Sinagra (Brooklyn, N.Y.) blasted a grand slam to deep centerfield. That lead was short-lived, however, as the Pioneers plated six runs in the third inning to grab a 9-5 advantage. Sophomore outfielder/pitcher Tracey Balinskas (Edison, N.J.) then drove in a run in the fourth with an RBI double to cut her team's deficit to 10-6. Following LIU Post scoring twice in the top half of the fifth, Molloy freshman third baseman Erin Clinton (Long Beach, Calif.) launched a solo shot, but the Lions still trailed, 12-7. Five more runs for the Pioneers in the sixth and seventh frames further secured the victory for LIU Post.

At the dish, Sinagra finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBIs.

Game 2: LIU Post 16, Molloy 7 (5 innings)

The deciding game for the East Coast Conference Championship was started off in the bottom half of the first when junior second baseman Brenda Lee (Corona, Calif.) slugged a solo shot over the left field fence to provide Molloy with a quick lead. The Pioneers responded with three homers in the next two innings, which accounted for seven runs. In the third inning, White sent a three-run homer over the left field wall to cut the Lions' deficit to 7-4. However, just as Molloy was starting to inch closer, the Pioneers plated nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 16-4 advantage. The Lions fought back, plating three runs in the fifth -- including another homer by White; this time a two-run shot -- but it wasn't enough as LIU Post went on to victory.

White finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored and five RBIs, while Lee went 2-for-4.

This now concludes the 2014 season for Head Coach Susan Cassidy-Lyke and the Lions. Please stay tuned to MolloyLions.com and @MolloyLions for all the softball program's offseason news and notes.
