Box Score DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (May 4, 2014) - On Sunday, the Molloy College baseball team played well on both sides of the ball as the Lions scored 12 runs on 15 hits and junior starter
Alex Brosnan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) threw eight solid innings in a 12-6 win over Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. With this victory, the Lions have clinched the No. 3 spot in the East Coast Conference Championship Tournament. Molloy finished with the regular season with a 19-22 overall record (12-12 ECC), while the Mavericks slipped to 14-27 on the year and 11-13 in the league, missing the tournament by one game.
Molloy had a big second inning as the Lions plated seven runs. Freshman
Ronald Bauer (Hicksville, N.Y.) started the scoring with an RBI single, which was followed two batters later by a bases-clearing, three-run triple by freshman
Anthony Alberghina (Staten Island, N.Y.). Senior
Carlos Guzman (Bloomingburg, N.Y.) added a sacrifice fly, while sophomore
Deilyn Guzman (East Hampton, N.Y.) contributed a two-run single down the left field line.
In the third, junior
Kyle Van Duyne (Sayville, N.Y.) drove in sophomore
Nicholas Gonchar (Staten Island, N.Y.) with a sacrifice fly, while in the fourth, Bauer had an RBI single and Van Duyne reached on an error, allowing Gonchar to score. After the top of the fourth, Molloy held a commanding 10-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Mercy scored its first run on an RBI groundout, and then in the fifth, scored two more via a home run. At the conclusion of the first five innings, Mercy had cut its deficit to 10-3.
The two clubs traded runs in the seventh and ninth innings to close out the game. In the seventh, D. Guzman recorded an RBI single, while in the ninth, Alberghina reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Gonchar to touch home plate. Mercy scored once in the seventh and twice in the ninth, but came up short as Molloy earned the 12-6 victory.
D. Guzman finished 4-for-6 with three RBIs, while Gonchar went 3-for-3 with four runs scored. Alberghina drove in four runs today. On the hill, Brosnan went eight innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on eight hits. He struck out five.

Joe Fucarino and the Lions will next play on the first day of the East Coast Conference Championship Tournament on Thursday, May 8. The third-seeded Lions will square off against the second-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans, with the start time to be determined.
