Baseball Battles Mercy in 23 Innings; Falls in Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 UNIONDALE, N.Y. (May 3, 2014) - On Saturday afternoon, the Molloy College baseball team battled East Coast Conference-opponent Mercy College in a doubleheader that lasted a combined 23 innings at Mitchel Field in Uniondale, N.Y.  The Mavericks swept the Lions and improved to 14-26 overall and 10-13 in the league, while Molloy fell to 18-22 on the year and 11-12 in the ECC. In Game 1, the Mavericks won 8-4, while in Game 2, Mercy won, 2-1 in 14 innings.

Game 1: Mercy 8, Molloy 4

Following an RBI single from sophomore Nicholas Gonchar (Staten Island, N.Y.), which gave Molloy a 1-0 lead, the Mavericks scored four times in the third inning. In the bottom half of the third, the Lions grabbed two of those runs back when sophomore Deilyn Guzman (East Hampton, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and freshman Ronald Bauer (Hicksville, N.Y.) recorded an RBI single.

Mercy scored another four runs in the fifth to take an 8-3 advantage. In the eighth frame, Molloy plated its final run of the game when freshman Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Game 2: Mercy 2, Molloy 1 (14 innings)

Molloy took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when junior Kyle Van Duyne (Sayville, N.Y.) drove in fellow junior John Galanoudis (Farmingdale, N.Y.) with an RBI single. In the next frame, Mercy tied the score when Andrew Kendel had an RBI groundout. The game would last until the 14th inning when Mercy scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly from Jesus Jaile. The Lions had several scoring opportunities in the game as they left 14 runners on base. On two occasions in the ninth and 11th innings, the Lions had a runner thrown out at the plate trying to score the game-winning run.

At the dish, senior Carlos Guzman (Bloomingburg, N.Y.) went 3-for-5 with two walks. On the hill, sophomore starter Shea Spitzbarth (Staten Island, N.Y.) hurled nine innings, giving up just one run on three hits. He struck out an incredible 13 batters.

Head Coach Joe Fucarino and the Lions will try to clinch a spot in the East Coast Conference playoffs with a win tomorrow. Molloy will square off against Mercy in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. beginning at 12 p.m.
