Box Score 2 UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Apr. 5, 2014) - On Saturday, the Molloy College baseball team fell in Game 1 of an East Coast Conference doubleheader to LIU Post, 7-4, but came back to win Game 2, 9-2, behind a tremendous pitching performance from sophomore starter
Shea Spitzbarth (Staten Island, N.Y.). With the decisions, the Lions' record changed to 9-13 overall (5-6 ECC), while the Pioneers are now at 9-8 on the year (3-3 ECC).
Game 1: LIU Post 7, Molloy 4 Following two runs scoring for LIU Post in the top of the first inning, Molloy answered in the bottom of the fifth by plating two of its own. Senior
Carlos Guzman (Bloomingburg, N.Y.) recorded a sacrifice fly, while junior
John Galanoudis (Farmingdale, N.Y.) singled in the tying run. The Lions grabbed another two runs in the seventh and eighth innings when C. Guzman tripled in the go-ahead run, and freshman
Ronald Bauer (Hicksville, N.Y.) tripled in the insurance run.
Ahead 4-2 in the top of the ninth, the Pioneers kept chipping away, eventually scoring five runs to take the lead. The Lions weren't able to get anything across in the bottom half of the inning, suffering a 7-4 defeat.
On the hill for Molloy, senior
Alex Miden (Ozone Park, N.Y.) pitched well -- hurling eight innings, giving up two runs on seven hits.
Game 2: Molloy 9, LIU Post 2The Lions scored their first runs of Game 2 in the third inning. J. Galanoudis singled in freshman
Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.) for the first run, while C. Guzman scored the second on a passed ball. Bauer had his second RBI triple of the afternoon, scoring J. Galanoudis to increase his team's lead to 3-0.
After the Pioneers grabbed one of those runs back with a sacrifice fly in the fourth, Molloy erupted for six runs in the fifth frame. The lineup batted around, starting with a C. Guzman RBI double. Freshman
Kevin Podell (Wantagh, N.Y.) had an RBI single, followed by a bases-loaded walk from junior
Kyle Van Duyne (Sayville, N.Y.). Freshman
Anthony Galanoudis (Farmingdale, N.Y.) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, while junior
Zach Norton (West Chester, Pa.) picked up an RBI single. Sophomore
Deilyn Guzman (East Hampton, N.Y.) lofted a sacrifice fly out to center field to score Molloy's ninth and final run of the game.
Besides a small hiccup in the ninth inning, Spitzbarth completed the complete game, improving his record to 1-2. He pitched nine innings, giving up two runs on eight hits, while whiffing five batters.
