Women's Lacrosse Bests Holy Family, 12-11

Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Apr. 3, 2014) - On Thursday evening, the Molloy College women's lacrosse team returned home to square off against non-conference opponent Holy Family University at the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex in Rockville Centre, N.Y.  With hat tricks from senior Samantha Arlotta (Garden City Park, N.Y.) and freshman Cooper Sesselman (Lindenhurst, N.Y.), the Lions defeated the Tigers, 12-11 to better their record to 6-4 overall. Holy Family dropped to 2-7 with the loss.

Brianna Lancetta got the scoring started after just 42 seconds into the game. She scored an unassisted goal to give the Tigers an early 1-0 lead. One minute later, over a 15-second span, the Lions retaliated with a pair of tallies. The first came off the stick of sophomore Ryan Meyer (East Meadow, N.Y.), while the other was recorded by fellow sophomore Katie O'Brien (Oyster Bay, N.Y.).

Holy Family then scored three straight times to take a 4-2 lead with 18:38 remaining in the first half. Two of the goals were from Paige Settar. Molloy freshman Taylor Corcoran (Holbrook, N.Y.) scored her eighth tally of the season before the Tigers tacked on another two goals to change the score to 6-3 in their favor.

Molloy scored twice, while Holy Family netted three goals to close out the first half. Sesselman and Corcoran had the tallies for Molloy as the Lions trailed at halftime, 9-5.

Following the intermission, Molloy scored three unanswered goals to cut its deficit to 9-8. O'Brien scored the first, while Arlotta proceeded to find the back of the cage twice. At 17:57, Arlotta's third marker was bookended by goals from the Tigers. With a little under four minutes to go in regulation, Holy Family led, 11-9.

The Lions kept at it, however, as Sesselman came up huge completing her hat trick with two goals. The first came at the 3:58 mark, while the second found its way past the goalie at the 1:33 interval. The rookie tied the game at 11-11.

Then with just 37 seconds left before overtime, Molloy senior Jessica Teves (Merrick, N.Y.) received a feed from fellow senior Candice Noakes (Levittown, N.Y.) and fired the ball past the Tigers' netminder to give the home team a 12-11 advantage. Thirty-seven seconds expired following that goal and the Lions were victorious.

Arlotta and Sesselman each had a hat trick, while O'Brien scored two times and dished out two assists. Noakes also had two assists. In the cage for the Lions, sophomore goalie Caroline Winters (Baldwin, N.Y.) stopped 10 shots.

Head Coach Tom Campolettano and the Lions return to the field on Saturday, Apr. 5 when they travel to Brookville, N.Y. to take on the defending NCAA Division II National Champion LIU Post Pioneers. The Pioneers are currently ranked No. 1 in the country in the latest IWLCA and Lacrosse Magazine polls. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
