Softball Sweeps Mercy in ECC Doubleheader, 12-4, 8-5

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Apr. 3, 2014) - On Thursday afternoon, the Molloy College softball team increased its winning streak to four games after taking two wins from Mercy College in East Coast Conference action. The Lions are now 9-9 overall and 5-0 in the conference. Following the losses, the Mavericks slipped to 4-19 on the year and 1-6 in league play.

Game 1: Molloy 12, Mercy 4 (5 innings)

The top of the first inning produced the entire offensive output for the Mavericks as they scored four runs on six hits. Molloy came back in the bottom half of the frame to claim one of those runs when freshman Ashley Fedor (Monroe, Conn.) reached on an error, allowing junior Brenda Lee (Corona, Calif.) to touch home plate.

The Lions erupted for five runs in the second inning. Lee had an RBI single, which was followed by a Milan Botte (San Diego, Calif.) RBI single. Senior Dayna White (East Islip, N.Y.) was responsible for the third run with an RBI groundout, while the other two runs came way of Mercy fielding errors.

Molloy junior Victoria Gunnels (North Bellmore, N.Y.) helped her team inch closer to the run-rule when she launched a solo homer over the left field fence in the bottom of the third to make the Molloy lead, 7-4.  A Brianne Catalano (Franklin Square, N.Y.) RBI single made it 8-4 in the fourth inning.

Senior Nicolette Sinagra (Brooklyn, N.Y.) started the bottom of the fifth off with a homer to left field. White had a sacrifice fly, while sophomore Tracey Balinskas (Edison, N.J.) scored on a passed ball. Gunnels had the final nail in Mercy's proverbial coffin when she recorded an RBI single to give Molloy an eight-run lead. The Lions won, 12-4.

Game 2: Molloy 8, Mercy 5

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Lions were right back at it offensively in the bottom of the first. Balinskas roped an RBI double to left center to get the scoring started. White followed that up with an RBI single, plating Botte. The Mavericks, however, responded immediately, scoring two of their own in the top of the second to tie the game. Jackie Couillard homered to left center, while Kelly Bentson scored on a single down the left field line by Janelle Wade.

Balinskas notched a two-run double in the bottom of the second to help Molloy grab a 4-2 advantage. That lead was cut in half when Mercy's Megan Johnson homered in the top of the third. In the fifth frame, Mercy plated two to take a 5-4 lead. That margin only lasted one inning as Molloy scored four times in the sixth. White recorded yet another RBI single, while freshman Erin Clinton (Long Beach, Calif.) followed her teammate by doing the same. When Catalano reached base in the inning via a fielding error, two runs came across to score, giving the Lions an 8-5 lead. Molloy locked down the top of the seventh earning the twinbill sweep.

Head Coach Susan Cassidy-Lyke and the Lions return to action on Saturday, Apr. 5 when they play at Bridgeport beginning at 12 p.m.
