Softball Sweeps St. Thomas Aquinas in Regular Season Finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SPARKILL, N.Y. (Apr. 27, 2014) - On Sunday, the Molloy College softball team closed out the regular season portion of its 2014 campaign with a doubleheader sweep of East Coast Conference-opponent St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill, N.Y., 8-0 and 9-1. With the wins, the Lions close out the regular season in second place within the ECC standings harboring a 20-7-1 record (28-20-1 overall). The Spartans finished the 2014 season with a 2-36 record (1-27 ECC).

Game 1: Molloy 8, St. Thomas Aquinas 0

In the first game, the Lions scored in four of the seven innings. Senior Nicolette Sinagra (Brooklyn, N.Y.) reached base three times in the game and had an RBI. Freshman Erin Clinton (Long Beach, Calif.) started things off with a sacrifice fly in the second inning, while Sinagra doubled in junior Brianne Catalano (Franklin Square, N.Y.) in the third. In the fifth, junior Brenda Lee (Corona, Calif.) doubled in a run, while sophomore Milan Botte (San Diego, Calif.) drove in two in the seventh with a single. A couple of Spartans' fielding errors also led to Molloy runs in the opening contest.

Freshman Chelsea Hawks (Wading River, N.Y.) pitched a complete-game shutout, giving up just three hits. She struck out seven and improved to 13-8 on the season

Game 2: Molloy 9, St. Thomas Aquinas 1

Sophomore Tracey Balinskas (Edison, N.J.) started Game 2's scoring in the third inning when she recorded a sacrifice fly to bring in Catalano. Balinskas added an RBI single two frames later, before Botte crushed a three-run homer in the same inning. A fifth-inning homer by the Spartans was the only hiccup for Balinskas in the circle. The Edison native went all seven innings, surrendering one run on two hits. She whiffed six batters, improving to 14-7 on the year.

Botte continued to pile on the runs as she knocked in another in the sixth inning with an RBI double. A batter later, senior Dayna White (East Islip, N.Y.) had a two-run single to increase Molloy's lead to 8-1. Senior Lauren Alexander (Huntington, N.Y.) smacked a solo homer in the seventh to give Molloy its ninth run of the game.

For the Lions, Botte finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs, while Balinskas went 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs. White finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
