Softball Downs Queens in Game 1 of ECC Twinbill; Game 2 Ends in Tie

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FLUSHING, N.Y. (Apr. 26, 2014) - On Saturday afternoon, the Molloy College softball team bested East Coast Conference-opponent Queens College in Game 1 of a doubleheader, 8-1, and then tied the Knights in Game 2, 1-1. The second contest was called in the eighth inning due to rain and will not be resumed. With the day's action, the Lions are now 26-20-1 overall (18-7-1 ECC), while the Knights are now 30-15-1 (18-9-1 ECC).

Game 1: Molloy 8, Queens 1

Although Molloy scored eight runs, the majority of its offensive damage came on three swings of the bat. In the first inning, senior Dayna White (East Islip, N.Y.) had an RBI single, while in the fifth she doubled in three runs. In that same frame, junior Victoria Gunnels (North Bellmore, N.Y.) blasted a grand slam to give Molloy an 8-1 lead.

Junior Brenda Lee (Corona, Calif.) finished 3-for-4, while in the circle, rookie Chelsea Hawks (Wading River, N.Y.) hurled the complete game. She gave up one run on three hits, while striking out nine.

Game 2: Molloy 1, Queens 1 (8 innings)

Queens scored in the sixth inning, while Molloy evened the score at 1-1 in the following frame as sophomore Milan Botte (San Diego, Calif.) recorded an RBI groundout. Molloy did have runners on second and third with none out in the top of the eighth inning, but the rain wouldn't let up, forcing the game to finish as a tie.

Sophomore Tracey Balinskas (Edison, N.J.) threw all seven innings, giving up one run on three hits.

Head Coach Susan Cassidy-Lyke and the Lions return to the diamond tomorrow to wrap up the regular season at St. Thomas Aquinas College beginning at 12 p.m.
