Baseball Wins in Dramatic Comeback Fashion; Defeats Queens, 2-1

Box Score UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Apr. 27, 2014) - The Molloy College baseball team returned to Mitchel Field today -- this time back as the home team -- to complete its four-game East Coast Conference series with Queens College. Down 1-0 through a good portion of the game, the Lions scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 2-1 lead. Molloy locked down the narrow victory in the ninth to improve to 17-19 overall and 10-10 in the league. The Knights fell to 8-22 on the season and 3-17 in the ECC.

With Molloy's 17th victory, Head Coach Joe Fucarino earned his 225th win as head coach of the Lions, surpassing Bernie Havern for the most in the history of the baseball program. Coach Havern finished his 13th-season tenure at the helm of the Lions with 224 wins. Coach Fucarino earned his 225th triumph in his ninth year as head coach.

Queens took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth when Francesco Monastra notched an RBI groundout. The Lions would have some chances, but had to wait until the eighth to grab their first advantage of the afternoon. With two outs and two strikes on him, freshman Kevin Podell (Wantagh, N.Y.) singled up the middle plating the tying run in senior Carlos Guzman (Bloomingburg, N.Y.). Just one batter later, junior John Galanoudis (Farmingdale, N.Y.) reached base via a Queens fielding error. On that play, freshman Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.) hustled all the way from second base to score the go-ahead run.

Freshman reliver Bobby Kelly (Mineola, N.Y.) pitched 1.2 innings, including the ninth, giving up no runs to improve to 1-1 on the year. Junior starter Alex Brosnan (Farmingdale, N.Y.) was brilliant, going 7.1 innings, surrendering just one run on seven hits. He struck out three.

Prior to today's game, the Lions' baseball program honored its four graduating seniors with a special Senior Day ceremony at home plate: Max Schonfeld, Alex Miden, Carlos Guzman and Anthony Eichhorn.

Within the ECC standings, Molloy is now sitting in third place with a 10-10 ledger, which slots ahead of the University of Bridgeport (11-13), LIU Post (9-11) and Mercy College (8-12).

Coach Fucarino and the Lions return to the diamond on Tuesday when they travel to Rockland County for a non-league matchup with Dominican College. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
