Box Score UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Apr. 25, 2014) - On Friday afternoon, following the ceremonial ribbon-cutting and blessing of Mitchel Field involving Nassau County executives and the upper administration of Molloy College, the Lions' and Queens College Knights' baseball teams battled through 11 innings in their East Coast Conference series opener. In the top of the 11th, the Knights plated two runs to grab a 4-2 lead and eventually the win. With the loss, the Lions are now 14-19 overall and 7-10 in the league, while the Knights improved to 8-19 on the season and 3-14 in the ECC.
The Lions took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when sophomore
Deilyn Guzman (East Hampton, N.Y.) recorded a sacrifice fly to bring in fellow sophomore
Nicholas Gonchar (Staten Island, N.Y.). The Knights tied it up in the fourth inning, and it wasn't for another four innings until another run scored. In the bottom half of the eighth, freshman
Kevin Podell (Wantagh, N.Y.) singled down the right field line to bring home rookie
Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.). Molloy took a 2-1 advantage.
The Knights wouldn't give up, however, as they scratched a run across in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 2-2 and send it to extras. In that 11th inning, after an error, Queens scored its two runs on a wild pitch and a steal of home.
Senior starter
Max Schonfeld (East Meadow, N.Y.) had a brilliant outing wasted. He went nine innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits. He struck out six. He lowered his season's ERA from 1.91 to 1.78.
Head Coach
Joe Fucarino and the Lions return to action tomorrow when they play a doubleheader at Queens College starting at noon.
