Softball Falls to No. 10 Caldwell in Non-Conference Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CALDWELL, N.J. (Apr. 23, 2014) - The Molloy College softball team ventured to New Jersey on Wednesday afternoon, faced with a tough task squaring off against No. 10 Caldwell College. The Lions fell in both games of this non-league doubleheader by differences of four runs, 6-2 and 5-1. Molloy slipped to 23-20 overall, while the Cougars improved to 34-4 on the campaign.

Game 1: Caldwell 6, Molloy 2

The Lions took the first lead of the game in the top of the first when sophomore Milan Botte (San Diego, Calif.) recorded an RBI single, plating junior Brenda Lee (Corona, Calif.). Caldwell tied the game in the bottom half of the inning when the Cougars hit an RBI single of their own. Molloy would grab the advantage back in the third when freshman Erin Clinton (Long Beach, Calif.) doubled down the left field line, allowing sophomore Tracey Balinskas (Edison, N.J.) to touch home plate. That 2-1 lead would be the last of the game for the Lions as Caldwell scored twice in the third and twice in the sixth to take a 6-2 lead and eventual win.

In the circle, Molloy freshman Chelsea Hawks (Wading River, N.Y.) surrendered six runs over six innings, but only one was earned. She struck out four batters.

Game 2: Caldwell 5, Molloy 1

In the second contest of the afternoon, Caldwell jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning via a pair of RBI singles. In the fourth, Molloy took one of those runs back when senior Lauren Alexander (Huntington, N.Y.) reached on a fielding error by the Caldwell second baseman, which allowed senior Dayna White (East Islip, N.Y.) to score. In the fifth and sixth innings, the Cougars recorded insurance runs, paving the way for a 5-1 triumph.

Head Coach Susan Cassidy-Lyke and her team returns to the diamond on Friday, Apr. 25 when the Lions host St. Thomas Aquinas College in their regular season home finale. The doubleheader will get underway at 3:30 p.m. from Bob Klein Field in Rockville Centre, N.Y.
