Softball Sweeps Doubleheader on Road Against NYIT

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Apr. 17, 2014) - The Molloy College softball team held on for a couple of close victories against East Coast Conference-foe NYIT in a doubleheader played on Thursday afternoon.  Molloy won game one, 2-0, and game two, 6-3, to improve to 19-14 (12-4 ECC).  NYIT fell to 11-9 overall and 6-14 in conference play.

Game 1: Molloy 2, NYIT 0

The Lions got a combined shutout from freshman starter Chelsea Hawks (Wading River, N.Y.) and sophomore pitcher Tracey Balinskas (Edison, N.J).  Hawks went the first four innings, allowing zero runs on three hits while striking out one batter.  She picked up her eighth win of the season (8-6).  Balinskas relieved Hawks, tossing three innings of three-hit ball to pick up her second save of the season.

The Molloy offense all came in the top of the fourth inning as Balinskas smacked a solo home run to center field.  It was her fifth homer of the season and 28th run batted in, both ranking second on the Lions.  Junior Victoria Gunnels (North Bellmore, N.Y.) added a sacrifice fly in the inning for the Lions' second run.

Game 2: Molloy 6, NYIT 3

It was the offense in Game 2 that carried Molloy to victory, as the Lions scored runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to secure the win.

In the top of third, junior Brenda Lee (Corona, Calif.), and Balinskas had RBI singles, while senior Dayna White (East Islip, N.Y.) followed those hits up with an RBI double of her own.  In the top of the fourth, White also added a two-run single to make it a 5-1 lead at that point.  For the game, White finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Hawks got the start again only going two innings and allowing one earned run.  Of the six outs she recorded, five of them were by way of the strikeout. Balinskas replaced her, pitching the third and fourth innings.  She allowed two runs on two hits, picking up her 10th victory of the season.  Sophomore Samantha Sauer (Plainview, N.Y.) tossed three innings of scoreless relief to finish the game.

Head Coach Susan Cassidy-Lyke and the Lions return to the diamond tomorrow to take on Pace University at Bob Klein Field in Rockville Centre, N.Y.  First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
