Behind Schonfeld's Complete-Game Shutout, Baseball Stings Bridgeport, 2-0

Box Score UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Apr. 17, 2014) - On Thursday, the Molloy College baseball team took the East Coast Conference series opener from the University of Bridgeport, 2-0 at Mitchel Field in Uniondale, N.Y.  With the win, the Lions are now 13-15 overall and 6-7 in the league, while the Purple Knights slipped to 12-19-1 on the year and 6-11 in the ECC.

The Lions scored in the first inning when junior left fielder John Galanoudis (Farmingdale, N.Y.) singled up the middle to bring home rookie third baseman Kevin Podell (Wantagh, N.Y.). Molloy would hold that 1-0 advantage through the next six innings until the Lions plated its second run of the game in the seventh. Junior catcher Kyle Van Duyne (Sayville, N.Y.) doubled in freshman Ronald Bauer (Hicksville, N.Y.) to increase the Lions' lead to 2-0.

On the other side of the ball, freshman right fielder Anthony Alberghina (Staten Island, N.Y.) made a crucial defensive play in the top of the eighth inning. With two runners on and two out, Bridgeport's Jesse Solar singled through the right side of the infield, but Alberghina was there to preserve the Lions' 2-0 lead as he fired home to nab Paul Menendez at home plate.

On the hill, senior starter Max Schonfeld (East Meadow, N.Y.) went the distance, hurling a complete-game shutout. He surrendered just five hits and struck out two. Schonfeld lowered his ERA to a sparkling 1.91 on the season.

Head Coach Joe Fucarino and the Lions return to the diamond on Saturday, Apr. 19 when they play the University of Bridgeport in doubleheader action at West Haven High School. The twinbill begins at 2 p.m.
