Softball Sweeps Dowling in Doubleheader Action

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Apr. 12, 2014) - On Saturday, the Molloy College softball team swept a doubleheader from East Coast Conference-opponent Dowling College by final scores of 6-0 and 8-6. Prior to the twinbill, the two squads resumed the game from March 27 that was halted in the sixth inning due to darkness. Dowling won that game, 3-2. The Lions now stand at 16-13 overall and 10-4 in the ECC, while Dowling is now 17-16 on the year and 10-6 in the league.

Game 1: Molloy 6, Dowling 0

The Lions scored in the first, second, fifth and sixth innings in Game 1 of the doubleheader. In the opening frame, sophomore Tracey Balinskas (Edison, N.J.) had an RBI groundout, while senior Dayne White (East Islip, N.Y.) recorded an RBI double. In the second, Balinskas continued her hot hitting with an RBI double of her own. Already ahead 3-0, the Lions grabbed some insurance in the fifth and sixth innings when freshman Erin Clinton (Long Beach, Calif.) had an RBI single, sophomore Milan Botte (San Diego, Calif.) drove in a run with an RBI groundout, and Balinskas picked up her second RBI double of the game.

In the circle, Balinskas and freshman Chelsea Hawks (Wading River, N.Y.) were equally as brilliant. Balinskas pitched a combined 3.1 shutout innings, while Hawks hurled 3.2 scoreless frames.

Game 2: Molloy 8, Dowling 6

Down 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Molloy tacked on six runs to pull ahead. Freshman Ashley Fedor (Monroe, Conn.) started it off with a sacrifice fly, while rookie Rachel Wisniewski (Elmont, N.Y.) had an RBI groundout, senior Nicolette Sinagra (Brooklyn, N.Y.) notched a run-scoring single, and it was all capped off with a three-run homer from junior Brenda Lee (Corona, Calif.).

The Golden Lions scored three in the top of the seventh and brought the tying run to the plate, but Molloy was able to lock down the win, 8-6.

Head Coach Susan Cassidy-Lyke and the Lions return to action tomorrow when they host Philadelphia University at 1 p.m.
