Box Score 2 UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Apr. 12, 2014) - On Saturday, the Molloy College baseball team picked up a pair of non-conference victories when the Lions swept a doubleheader from Nyack College, 12-1 and 2-1. With the wins, the Lions are now 12-15 overall.
Game 1: Molloy 12, Nyack 1Freshman
Kevin Podell (Wantagh, N.Y.) started this game off on a positive note with an RBI triple in the opening inning. Sophomore
Nicholas Gonchar (Staten Island, N.Y.) followed that up with an RBI single in the same frame to put Molloy ahead, 2-0. In the third inning, freshman
Ronald Bauer (Hicksville, N.Y.) and rookie
Anthony Alberghina (Staten Island, N.Y.) picked up RBI base hits to increase the Lions' lead to 5-0. Molloy would go on to score three runs in the fourth, once in the fifth and three runs in the seventh to lock down a 12-1 triumph.
On the hill, senior
Alex Miden (Ozone Park, N.Y.) went seven innings, surrendering no runs on three hits. He struck out five. In the box, Podell went 4-for-5 with three RBIs, while Gonchar went 4-for-4 with three RBIs. Ronald finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while junior
Kyle Van Duyne (Sayville, N.Y.) notched a 3-for-4 showing at the plate.
Game 2: Molloy 2, Nyack 1In this classic pitchers' duel, sophomore starter
Shea Spitzbarth (Staten Island, N.Y.) went the distance for Molloy, giving up one run on seven hits. He whiffed seven Nyack batters.
Alberghina put the Lions on the scoreboard first in the fifth inning when he singled home Van Duyne. Nyack tied it at 1-1 in the sixth inning, before Molloy would take the lead again. In the seventh, Van Duyne singled down the right field line, allowing Bauer to score the go-ahead run.
