Box Score UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Apr. 11, 2014) - The Molloy College baseball team earned a 5-4 non-conference win over Dominican College at Mitchel Field in Uniondale, N.Y. on Friday afternoon to improve to 10-15 on the season. The Chargers dropped to 9-16 on the year.
The Lions went on the scoreboard first when they plated three runs in the second inning. The scoring started when junior
Kyle Van Duyne (Sayville, N.Y.) recorded a sacrifice fly, and then continued when freshman
Austin Nieves (Glendale, N.Y.) blasted an inside-the-park two-run homer to centerfield. In the third, freshman
Ronald Bauer (Hicksville, N.Y.) brought home Molloy's third run when he smacked an RBI single up the middle.
The Chargers scored twice in the fifth to cut their deficit in half, 4-2. In the bottom half of the inning, sophomore
Nicholas Gonchar (Staten Island, N.Y.) grounded out to shortstop, allowing freshman
Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.) to touch home plate and increase Molloy's lead to 5-2.
After Molloy rookie reliever
Bobby Kelly (Mineola, N.Y.) blanked the Chargers in the eighth inning and then retired the first batter in the ninth, the Lions' closer
Matt Castaneda (East Meadow, N.Y.) came on to secure the win. Despite surrendering two runs and the Chargers cutting their deficit to 5-4, Castaneda eventually locked down Molloy's 10th win of the season.
At the dish, Murphy went 2-for-3, while freshman
Kevin Podell (Wantagh, N.Y.) finished 3-for-4. In addition, Bauer recorded a 2-for-4 performance in the batter's box. On the hill, senior
Max Schonfeld (East Meadow, N.Y.) started the game for Molloy and went seven innings. He gave up two runs, although both were unearned. He struck out six and allowed just four hits. His ERA on the season was lowered to a sterling 2.27.
