Schonfeld Shines as Baseball Takes Down Dominican, 5-4

Box Score UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Apr. 11, 2014) - The Molloy College baseball team earned a 5-4 non-conference win over Dominican College at Mitchel Field in Uniondale, N.Y. on Friday afternoon to improve to 10-15 on the season. The Chargers dropped to 9-16 on the year.

The Lions went on the scoreboard first when they plated three runs in the second inning. The scoring started when junior Kyle Van Duyne (Sayville, N.Y.) recorded a sacrifice fly, and then continued when freshman Austin Nieves (Glendale, N.Y.) blasted an inside-the-park two-run homer to centerfield. In the third, freshman Ronald Bauer (Hicksville, N.Y.) brought home Molloy's third run when he smacked an RBI single up the middle.

The Chargers scored twice in the fifth to cut their deficit in half, 4-2. In the bottom half of the inning, sophomore Nicholas Gonchar (Staten Island, N.Y.) grounded out to shortstop, allowing freshman Brian Murphy (Elmont, N.Y.) to touch home plate and increase Molloy's lead to 5-2.

After Molloy rookie reliever Bobby Kelly (Mineola, N.Y.) blanked the Chargers in the eighth inning and then retired the first batter in the ninth, the Lions' closer Matt Castaneda (East Meadow, N.Y.) came on to secure the win. Despite surrendering two runs and the Chargers cutting their deficit to 5-4, Castaneda eventually locked down Molloy's 10th win of the season.

At the dish, Murphy went 2-for-3, while freshman Kevin Podell (Wantagh, N.Y.) finished 3-for-4. In addition, Bauer recorded a 2-for-4 performance in the batter's box. On the hill, senior Max Schonfeld (East Meadow, N.Y.) started the game for Molloy and went seven innings. He gave up two runs, although both were unearned. He struck out six and allowed just four hits. His ERA on the season was lowered to a sterling 2.27.

Head Coach Joe Fucarino and the Lions next play tomorrow when they host Nyack College in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.  LiveStats will be available right here at MolloyLions.com.
