Box Score 2 ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Apr. 1, 2014) - The Molloy College softball squad took two games from East Coast Conference-opponent the New York Institute of Technology on Tuesday afternoon, 7-0 and 10-1. The second contest was just five innings long due to Molloy run-ruling the Bears. With the wins, the Lions improved to 7-9 overall and 3-0 in the conference. Following the losses, the Bears slipped to 3-9 on the season and 0-4 in league play.
Game 1: Molloy 7, NYIT 0 The Lions had the first game under control right out of the gate as Molloy scored four times in the opening frame. Junior second baseman
Brenda Lee (Corona, Calif.) had an RBI double, which was followed up by a run-scoring single off the bat of sophomore catcher
Milan Botte (San Diego, Calif.). Sophomore pitcher
Tracey Balinskas (Edison, N.J.) was the third run to score after freshman third baseman
Ashley Fedor (Monroe, Conn.) reached on a fielder's choice. Junior first baseman
Victoria Gunnels (North Bellmore, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring when she drove in Botte with an RBI single.
In the second inning, senior shortstop
Nicolette Sinagra (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored on a passed ball, while Fedor touched home plate on an RBI double by junior centerfielder
Brianne Catalano (Franklin Square, N.Y.) in the third frame. Molloy's final run of the day was scored in the fifth inning when Sinagra's RBI single brought home Catalano.
In the circle, Balinskas was stellar, throwing a complete-game, six-hit shutout. She struck out four batters and walked only one. She moved to 5-4 on the season and lowered her earned run average to 2.73.
Game 2: Molloy 10, NYIT 1 (5 innings)In the bottom of the third, the Lions plated three runs to draw first blood on the scoreboard. Lee had another RBI double, while Botte crushed a two-run double. Freshman third baseman
Erin Clinton (Long Beach, Calif.) joined the offensive party as she roped a two-run double to increase Molloy's lead to 5-0. NYIT grabbed one of those runs back in the top of the fourth when Amber Calvillo scored Veronica Tartaglia via an RBI single. The Lions responded with another five runs in the bottom half of the fourth. Lee notched her third RBI double of the afternoon, Balinskas singled in a pair of runs, and Botte deposited her seventh homer of the season over the fence -- a two-run shot.
Pitching for Molloy was freshman
Chelsea Hawks (Wading River, N.Y.), who gave up one run on five hits in five innings. She whiffed four batters.
